I see police with wireless mics that connect to their cars all the time. Do those mics work on the regular wireless mic frequencies or are they on separate licensed channels? I live in the middle of no where, so there are rarely any cops using them within range of my house.

They could even be tied in with their regular radio and be part of a vehicle repeater system.

It wouldn't surprise me if the mics connect to their video recording system. Also, many professional mics use portions of TV channels. It doesn't take much spectrum or power to accomplish what they need to do here.

I see there's a lot to search out there. Any ideas of what the ranges are on something like that? Most activity in my area takes place about a mile and a half away. Would it be possible to pick them up on a regular portable scanner?

So if I pull up and stop behind a cop who has someone pulled over, and proceed running my frequency sweeper to pick up his conversation, he won't mind will he?

With my st2 antenna in my attic I pick up the local PD wireless mikes up to about 1.5 miles away. I have heard some great things when they are within range.
