• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Would these be worth the investment?

So the guy I bought my radio shack 19-1210 from also has these for sale. A pair of them, new in box. I’m tempted, but not sure they’re worth the investment. They are “business band”, but UHF instead of VHF. Looks like the frequencies start just above GMRS, which probably makes them useless/illegal for me to use currently. But I wanted to ask the group anyway, because I like radios and am tempted to get them just because. He’s asking $70 for the pair. My biggest concern is what shape the batteries are in and how hard would it be to find replacements.IMG_6906.jpegIMG_6907.jpegIMG_6908.jpegIMG_6909.jpeg

You would need an FCC issued license to use those legally.

The batteries are probably shot, and finding replacements would be difficult if not impossible. Rebuilding battery packs for a radio that you can't legally use and are that old is something you'd need to decide.

Sometimes there's a good reason people are selling radios so cheap...

If you really got the hots for those types of radios, Radio Shack did sell a GMRS version that was halfway decent. But, same issues, you need a suitable GMRS license and the batteries are going to be shot.

Thanks for the quick response guys. I don’t really have a need for them, and I definitely don’t want to get into rebuilding battery packs and all that. I think I’m going to pass on these.

That Radio takes me back I actually thought about buying one or two, but they're simplex only, and I need a radio that I could use on the Town Watch's Repeater. I didn't have a GMRS license back then, but the Town Watch Members Piggybacked off of 2 members that were licensed. Of course, that was and still remains a taboo, because unless you're all relatives, we were supposed to have our own license.
