I've been using my BC296D for years to listen to the Seattle King County Public Safety system with no issues. I've always wanted to monitor the South Sound 911 system (P25 PH II) so I picked up a new WS1098 in the hopes I could finally monitor that system.

No matter what I try, I can't seem to get the WS1098 to reliably pick up any trunked system (Some conventional freqs seem to work well). Even when programmed for the same Seattle system my BC296D is actively receiving (Sitting next to the WS1098), the WS1098 picks up no talk group activity. I'm using the built in RR database that comes with the WS1098.

If there's anyone in the Seattle/Tacoma area who has had success with their WS1098, I'd like to see if there's some 'getting started' advice available. Perhaps there's something simple I've missed or perhaps the front end of this WS1098 has just failed right out of the box?

Thanks,

You might try going to RR and downloading the system into the radio. Sometimes systems change and preprogrammed radios don't have the updates. RR usually keeps up with changes promptly.

Try turning on the att so GA shows in the display.

You may have to play with the squelch also.

This system?
Seattle-King County Public Safety Trunking System, Seattle, Washington - Scanner Frequencies

How did you do you programming? EZ Scan on the PC or import directly from within the library on the SD card?

Have you updated the library via EZ Scan?

Copied the library and programming to the SD card?

The system appears to have 15 sites. Which site(s) did you program. It might be that you are locking onto a "quiet" site that is close to you.

Consider including programming for only the one site you want to hear (and/or lock the other sites out). Be sure to include all frequencies and not just the control channels.

Just throwing some ideas out there...

You're right about the database issue. For whatever reason, the latest RR database library Whistler claims to have isn't even close to current. I just reprogrammed all the freqs and wham! Tons of talk groups started appearing.

Now to figure out why South Sound 911 is such a pain to pickup...

Thanks,

Programming from an updated EZ Scan library.
Only one site enabled (Seattle simulcast) since that's what my BC296D has always used.

Seems the EZ Scan library has the wrong freqs (Doesn't even have the primary control channel!). I guess trusting the library isn't wise.

I believe you can do anything from the keypad that you can from EZ Scan. It's tedious and confusing though and the user manual is really surprisingly unorganized. Best to make a backup of the SD Card before you experiment with everything from the keypad because (As I found out) it's all to easy to forget what's been changed since you're limited to just a tiny screen.

I'm learning quickly that getting to understand EZ Scan is making the keypad interface much more understandable. I seriously doubt I'll do any editing on the keypad other than skip/lockout selections.
