Hello,

On the Wisconsin State Patrol "deforest post" frequency (154.680/136.5) twice now I've heard a transmission regarding Blue Mounds. Specifically, here's one example:

"Blue Mounds, One Twenty-Five"

Both times I do not recall hearing the other half of the transmission. Each occurrence was on different days, so it may not have been number 125 both times. Now, based on the transmission it sounded like unit 125 calling "Blue Mounds" or the other way around. But the WSP doesn't have an office in Blue Mounds last I checked.

Any clue what this could've been? There is a radio tower in Blue Mounds. Could it have been related to that?

Thank you.

Yes, the troopers call out their number with their closest tower they are using to the Post's comm center.

I have a list of towers somewhere but would have to dig it up if you need it.

State Patrol uses towers on high ground throughout the state. For D1 (oops, "DeForest") you have Baraboo, Blue Mounds, Deerfield and a few others - IIRC Kieler by the Iowa border and a "newer" one near the state line by I-90. As noted, they're called out by name.

A semi-funny story about this - a few years back there was a local LEO that came up on either WISPERN or point to report something (DUI, speeder, I honestly forget now). The conversation went something like this, with Delafield being the tower near the sheriff's unit:

"Sheriff unit 401 to Wisconsin State Patrol on Point"
"This is Delafield, unit calling go ahead"

<pause>

"Sheriff unit 401 to Wisconsin State Patrol on Point"
"Unit calling Delafield, go ahead with traffic"

<pause>

"Sheriff unit 401 to Wisconsin State Patrol on Point"
"Unit calling Delafield, go ahead with your traffic"

<pause>

"Sheriff unit 401 to *THE* *WISCONSIN* *STATE* *PATROL* ON POINT!"
"THIS IS DELAFIELD, GO AHEAD WITH YOUR TRAFFIC! I HAVE YOU LOUD AND CLEAR!"

<pause>

In a disgusted voice:

"Delafield, please stop interfering with my transmission, I am trying to reach the State Patrol!"

Not all the towers are on "high ground". If they were, there wouldn't be a need for 80+ towers for voice and even more sites for data.

Using the tower name is a hold-over from the lowband days were the system was setup like CHP's system is now...the field talked on one freq, and the comm center answered on a different freq. The field used the tower name of the one closest to them so the dispatcher would answer them on that tower. It was for the benefit of the field, not the dispatcher. The field could not hear other units when they talked either.

Since the switch to highband and the addition of several dozen more tower sites, the field traffic is repeated and for the most part they can hear each other now. There really is no need to call out towers anymore, but until the policy changes it remains. From the inception of the radio system until the late 70's/early 80's, there was only a handful of towers per district and in one case there was a single tower to cover the district. A lot has changed since then.

Stateboy, I listen to the Ozaukee county system so I can hear everything. When I listen to the VHF freq., I don't pick up much. It would be nice if they simulcasted all the sites.

I also think it is like here in Dist 6. The car calls the dispatch center with ID'ing of the tower they are on. i.e. WSP D6 car 654 needs to call dispatch and is near Baldwin, WI - "Baldwin 654" Thus the squad ID's as 654 and is talking into the Baldwin tower. So when dispatch answers them they know to answer them on the Baldwin tower.

Now from what I understand the towers will rebroadcast the traffic of the mobile units, however since disaptch transmits out the towers like a base radio you will only hear dispatch on the tower they are talking on if you are cloase by.

A good example of that over here in WSP D6 is when a state car talks on the Eau Claire tower - "654 Eau Claire" and since I am all the way over by Hudson and can not really hear D6 talk back I hear nothing, then I hear what he is calling in about.

Does that all make sense? It is very similar to how the DNR has it setup with Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, and Echo's etc... thus the colors related to PL to talk into towers.

I'd love to see it if you come across it, but don't go digging for it just for me:)

Just FYI Grant County is now in Tomah Post due to district re alligning, they wanted the dot to be the same as the state patrol, orriganly WSP was D-1 and the dot was D-5. Thats just the rumer mills working that I have heard, has anyone heard why they have switched

You're about 4.5 years late...the re-alignment happened during late 2004/ early 2005.
