Although I will not be transmitting, and receiving only, I still think tuning the antenna would be beneficial. Because I intend to monitor several bands, it's pretty much impossible for me to have a resonant antenna system at my residence. I have HOA restrictions but I'll be able to adequately hide it. Wife needs a clothes line for long curtains. I know...more rule breaking! :sneaky:

With a manual tuner, you can "tune" the antenna for maximum noise. In other words, adjust the inductance and capacitance until the noise floor comes up. At that point, your antenna will probably be near resonance for the frequency you are receiving. You can do this without transmitting.

With some automatic tuners, you can manually step through the inductance and capacitance settings to get close to the resonance point.

Not because of the Xiegu. There is no comparison between the two.

I picked up a 7300 for $800 from a local chap. Fantastic deal. Updated the firmware with the latest and wow!

For a new ham - these radios are just really hard to beat, value wise. I see another fellow locally trying to sell a (how old?) FT-1000MP for $1500. Maybe it's got some sentimental value as a former top-of-the-line rig for a collector, but those attributes won't cut it for a newbie on a budget. So it's been sitting on a for-sale list forever and is going nowhere fast.

For everyone who uses HF on the amateur radio bands, the Icom IC-7300 has been disruptive technology. Nothing else has its combination of features, performance, and price. That said, the Yaesu FTdx-10 has better measured receive performance than the IC-7300, but it's more money...for now.

However, this thread is asking about the Xiegu G90. Among very portable QRP radios, I've heard good things about it, though I have no personal experience. Seems like lots of features in a small package for a reasonable price.
