XP task bar

I am running XP. My bottom task bar has too many things on it. I do not use a lot of them. How do I remove the ones I do not need?

1. With mouse cursor on task bar, right click and make sure "Lock the Taskbar" is unchecked
2. Mouse over unwanted icons, right click and delete as desired.
3. Upgrade to a newer O.S. XP is a big target for malware, viruses etc.
