• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

    Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued.     To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

    The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

    This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

XPR 4550 Possibly Bricked??

I recently was writing to my XPR 4550 UHF mobile and halfway through the programming the radio froze. I tried turning the radio off and reprogramming it again and now my laptop will not recognize the radio. It says it’s a failure when I look at the Device Manager on my laptop. The radio also has deleted channels from zones and scan lists. Basically it’s moved channels into random zones and scan list. Does anyone know of a way that I can reset this radio from the buttons on the radio? Thanks.

There is no "reset" like you think there is

Also confused by the "radio also has deleted channels from zones and scan lists" because the radio either took the codeplug or it didn't. It's not going to magically remove channels on its own.

Try to force a write again with a rear programming cable. As long as the radio powers, it's not a total brick from whatever you did to the thing

No the radio has moved channels around into random zones and scan list. There are a lot of channels that are not in certain zones in CPS that are in the radio. This happened after the radio froze up and I tried to reprogram it. Is the rear programming cable the serial type connection?

I have been using the front mic jack. I had idea the rear cable even existed until it was mentioned here.

OK. I personally have not had any trouble with the front cable when programming but, I usually use the rear cable most of the time. I had to get a front cable to program a radio I bought (4550 VHF) that for some reason the rear cable didn't work. I tried 3 cables and 2 different laptops and no combination would get the rear cable to work in just that one radio. All of those worked on the other 10 or 12 4550/4580/5550/5580's I ever went to program or update so I'm not sure why on that one radio, nothing from the rear would work. I guess something with the rear plug although we looked and nothing jumped out at us and since the front cable worked ok, I didn't want to get into it too much.

The cable has always worked for years with no issue. I believe that something happened in the middle of the cps writing to the radio causing some type of error with the radio it's self. I tested the cable on another XPR 4550 with the same computer and CPS 2 with no issues. But I'll try and see if this rear cable allows the radio to communicate with the cps.

And you tried to re-write to that radio or maybe clone from the other plug to it??? (assuming they're the same band)

No, clone on the CPS.
We do it often between radios of the same model number. I just did 4, 4550's off the same VHF code plug for 3 other hams in the area...

OP said his computer doesnt recognize the radio. If write didn't work, clone wont work either.

The CPS and my laptop does not recognize the radio anymore so the CPS unable to communicate with the radio at this time.

ok sorry I must have forgotten that in the mix, thanks. you are absolutely correct, I just encountered this on a 4550 I was trying to do from the rear. However that one never worked from the rear since I received it well used.
