• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

For signaling. What’s the difference between call alert, call alert w/voice and Sel Cal?

I’m pretty sure sel call is the right choice to have the radio alert like a pager for QCII tones and voice.

This is from another response about a similar question—-

Call alert: acts like old fashioned pager: on receipt of PL/DPL and QC tones, causes audible or visual indication of having been paged. Set as "OR", will also receive dispatch traffic.

Selective Call: uses QC to unmute receiver. Set as AND, radio does not unmute on normal dispatch traffic, but unmutes on voice traffic after receipt of QC tones. Depending on programming, stays unmuted to dispatch traffic (a) until manually remuted by button press or (b) until an auto reset timer expires. This way radio serves as a "Night Dispatch" or "Emergency Call-back" function. Set as OR, radio receives normal dispatch traffic, but will also unmute on RF sent with QC but no PL; used for private comms between two units not repeated for others.

Although I don't disagree with the above description it's a little convoluted.

Call alert is used to alert the user that another radio is attempting to contact them while they are away from the radio. When paged the radio will beep, flash a led and/or display a text on the display. On a mobile there is the option to honk the horn or flash lights. This condition continues until reset.

Call alert with voice adds the ability to use a voice announcement after the radio is paged. Normally used with AND squelch which mimics the operation of pager. Reset to muted audio can be manual or timed.

Sel Call is basically used to converse with a single radio or limited group of radios. More than what can be done with different PL/DPL can do.
When a transmitting radio initiates a sel call its receiver is unmuted as is the receiving radio when it receives the call. This way a conversation can take place back and forth without bothering other users on the channel. After the conversation is over the radios will revert back to a muted condition after a timer expires. Again used with AND squelch as using OR squelch kind of defeats the whole purpose.
