i don't think someone would be selling stolen motorola xpr on Mercari, they verify you and, assuming it is stolen, it would be way too easy to find the person who stole it. I had a 7550 before but never had to program it. the person who sold it to me says they had a shop programming all their radios and then they folded during covid, they got new radios and threw away the old ones. I had it turned on ever since I got it, it has gps on it, I assume someone would come looking for it by now if it was, no?
And the lesson would be not to ask for help on a radio forum? Because even here people will choose to be rude instead of helpful? I paid money for it, mostly because I didn't want to spend $950 on a brand new one, tossing it in a trash isn't an option for me, I can resell it for $600+. Thank for your 'help' though.
I asked the seller but he is a 70 year old man and swears he doesn't know it, he apologized many times and tried to reach one of the people who worked for the store that sold it to them in the first place but it no longer exists, they closed during covid. He said he will keep trying and will get back to me after he asks the property boss to reach out to those guys and find out the passwords for his and other radios because they used the same one.
the radio itself doesn't have a password, the store I took it to said the internals have it (code plug) and told me it would be another $100-200 to remove it because I'll have to buy entitlements again, whatever they are, sounds nuts but it is what I've been told. The radio itself turns on and works, no password or anything else.
Companies buy them from a dealer, radio dealer programs them and puts a password on so they can be the only dealer to service the radios. Company sells their equipment or trashes and you end up like this. Not too many places would pay bench time for the dealer to clear passwords in radios they're going to throw away or sell(as many people don't know they have passwords, they bought them from the dealer and left programming up to the dealer) Many of them are treated as e-waste and thrown away, or sold off as-is and ends up in a surplus sellers hands and they have no idea what they have and such as your radio that was sold thru a few different hands, it happens sometimes unless you buy from a person knowledgeable in radios and their product they're selling who checked for a password or cleared it. plenty of stolen radios don't have passwords
Exactly! Plus, selling stolen stuff online is a good way to go to prison, these radios can be tracked, I read about someone who was stealing police radios (yes, in Brooklyn, where I live, people steal from the police, sounds unbelievable but they do) and they caught them, after they sold them on Craigslist and ebay, the police closed down their ebay account and imprisoned them.

I figured as much. Besides, on an android phone I can just see the steps log, I thought that this radio, even though it has a passworded plug, would be able to show internally when it was enabled, without editing anything. I just wanted to know if there was a way to see if the password was enabled recently but, you know, c'est la vie...
That's not how that works, sorry.
Catch 22: if I recover mine I will never know who did it and when. Really hope the gentleman who sold me this radio suddenly stumbles onto someone who will finally say "omg yeah, I forgot I put a password on it, it's blah blah blah...".
