• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I wrote this reply in another thread about a screenshot that wasn't started by me:

I can't take a screenshot because I don't have the right cable and the dealer/tech did not allow me to take one because he said it would compromise security somehow, even though I just wanted to take a picture of the firmware/software version which Google said was important.
I ordered my own cable that same day but it arrived without a plug for XPR. The next cable I ordered had the plug but the pins were wrong... I hope the third time will be the charm because, if not, I will give up and buy the Motorola-branded cable, it's very expensive for an old data cable (~$100-200) but it may be the only solution because the aftermarket ones say they support "all major MotoTRBO radios including XPR3, 5, 6, 7" but, when plugged in, don't work at all. I also ordered a wrong antenna and a bad charger.
Will take a screenshot as soon as I receive the cable, it's running late, from China...

Catch 22: if I recover mine I will never know who did it and when. Really hope the gentleman who sold me this radio suddenly stumbles onto someone who will finally say "omg yeah, I forgot I put a password on it, it's blah blah blah...".
That's not a catch-22 scenario. You could theoretically find your answer to who placed it, without finding the password. Catch 22 relies upon some fact (in this case being the codeplug password) being the only reason that you can't find the password, which it is not.

What you have there is more akin to Schrödinger's password, as it is both known and unknown to you...but not really.

Anyways, good luck on your quest.

Just take a photo with your phone.

Ok, let's make it simple: what does the popup window look like: one field (just a password) or 2 fields (like login and password, which is TLS-PSK challnge)?

I thought it was a catch 22 before finding out that I could technically find out...
But, speaking of Schrödinger's cat: I never understood how this cat could be thought of as dead and alive at the same time because it was definitely one or the other, not proving or disproving anything other than that it was not possible to see through boxes. I mean, us not knowing the exact state doesn't change the physical state or the fate of the cat, does it? So it's not dead and alive at the same time, it's one or the other. We don't know lots of things, doesn't mean they all exist in this 'in-between' state just because of us being unaware of their current status. In my very humble opinion this was a stupid experiment that resulted in possible deaths of innocent felines and not much else.

Will do, waiting for the data cable. As I mentioned before, this is what the tech told me, in the radio store, he also didn't allow me take a screenshot of his monitor, claiming security reasons, that's when I've decided to do this on my own and purchased a data cable, editing for it to arrive, should be any day now. Hopefully, I'll be able to do this tomorrow and post a screenshot with the exact information.

In Each MOTOTRBO radio, there is a "password of the day" that is calculated on the date and serial number. Basically, you call Motorola, prove you are the legitimate owner of the radio, and they will give you a password that is good for the day to get into the radio. Or, you recover the radio. TT

Would Motorola come after the person who isn't a dealer but sold me the radio anyway? I don't want them to give me the password but then f*ck over the guy who sold it to me for cheap.
Also, I bought it on Mercari, it had at least two owners before me, you think this would satisfy their definition of "legal owner"?..

I just received the data cable. Wish me luck, I hope I don't turn it into a relatively-expesive paperweight!

Does anybody know where I can find firmware 02.08.01.0000? I have no idea what this means but I need it in order to recover my radio.

Final update on this saga: the password was 12345678. The guy who sold it to me texted me, turns out the poor man felt badly about selling me this semk-lemon and has been hard at work trying to locate the former employees of that radio shop who reminded him that the password had always been 12345678... I could have guessed it, however, the silver lining is that it's definitely not stolen. I'm also very proud of myself that I did it in my own. All I need now is to find a way to update the firmware and I'll be set.

I never asked, didn't matter to me. Like I said, it was my first and, possibly, only time when I bought an expensive radio online. I was seduced by a very low price.
By the way, it's a REALLY NICE RADIO! I like it a lot more than Hytera PD982 I'm replacing with it, even though Hytera has GPS... Which I don't need anyway.

Sometimes someone who has the program & cable and is skilled in the use of WireShark can discover it. I have seen it done but it is very hit and miss.
If you send it to Motorola they will remove it as ap part of their flat rate repair which should be in the neighborhood of $350.00.

I don't need to repair it, it works fine and it's in very decent shape, with a couple of off scratches here and there.
When I first got it I had an issue with programming it in a form of a wrong cable sent to me by amazon and a password on that codeplug thing... But then I finay got the right cable, found the necessary software, got the password from the man who sold it to me and learned to program it. Now it's my daily driver and it works a lot better than any other radio I used, also communicates fine with other radios and brands on the same frequencies. It was a very steep learning curve though.

Only thing I don't understand is what the difference is between, say, 400mhz and 500mhz, this radio and my other radios cover a frequency range of 400-500mhz, is one better at propagating than the other? I mean, if I change frequencies on my channels, will I get better range or it's all for the sake of making sure the spectrum isn't too saturated? Because there are plenty of two way radios here and the digital ones never interfere with one-another... So I'm confused. I'm also unsure of what "offset" is and why it exists.

Offset is for repeaters. And before you ask, no you can't just pop up on a company's repeater.

You can't just "change frequencies" on your channels, you must have a valid FCC license for particular frequencies you use. This is why you use a Frequency Coordinator to make sure your frequencies do not interfere with others, or them with you.

I UNDERSTAND THE LEGAL ASPECT OF IT, I'm asking whether one frequency range is better than the other in range and/or menstruating objects, walls, etc. . For some reason people here choose not to answer my questions and/or help me, instead, all I get are warnings about the legal aspects of violating FCC rules and, in general, telling me things I didn't ask nor care about, explaining to me what may happen if the scenarios they, themselves proposed, play out with me and the consequences, which don't apply, befall me because of something id never do. I had no idea I had to start every sentence with "not that I would ever do this but, strictly hypothetically, if I had all the f***ing licenses from the FCC for every existing frequency and carried a miniature pocket frequency coordinator slash FCC-itself trapped inside a body of the pocket coordinator who always made sure I did the right thing... Also, once again, strictly hypothetically...".

I'm guessing you have no idea on the specifics of uhf wave Propagation and/or object penetration properties so instead you write out excerpts from the FCC rule book. Thanks again.
