• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I have a few xts5000 that i would like to use for direct simplex communication. What would be the distance that they could reach in a rural wooded area?

The radios i have are 700-800 MHz

1. Do you have a license to be using them on 7/800 MHz? There is no frequency on 7/800 that you could possibly use that you could just "get by".
2. If you are lucky, maybe 3/4 of a mile.

I run a couple of 800MHz systems, and I have a few simplex channels in the radios. Working in heavily forested areas, I can tell you that range will be poor on these frequencies.

As others have pointed out, there are no "free" frequencies in the 700 and 800MHz bands. No itinerant channels, no CB/public use channels. Most of the spectrum is set aside for public safety users, some commercial users, and if these are pre-reband radios, cellular. Causing interference to any of those users will result in issues you don't need.

Even though those radios will run 3 watts transmitter power, you'll get much better performance from 2 watts on MURS, or even a couple of watts on UHF (FRS/GMRS). 800MHz isn't a good choice for this sort of stuff.

If I didn't know any better and asked a similar question, I would not mind if someone mentioned a potential legal problem. There is a fine line between a habitual frequency cop and a helpful suggestion.

His question was simply what range he could expect. He didn’t ask anything about licensing. I simply answered his question.

But yet we have hunters using marine radios in the woods hundreds of miles from water. We have hundreds of people buying non Part 90 CCR’s preprogrammed on commercial freq’s using them to talk simplex to each other. Many people ask questions about programming radios, but yet the “bottled“ reply is “buy a scanner”. I simply answered a technical question without spouting the legal disclaimer.
