To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hi All,

I’ve got a little predicament and I’m hoping you can help?

I recently got an XTL5000 110w (model # M20QTS9PW1AN). Very nice radio and I love it! The remote head that I got works and all but is a little older. I would like to swap it out with a brand new 05 blackout head that I have and just wondering if they are comparable and what cable I would need.

I’ve tried researching this and quickly realized this rabbit hole has very little info online. Here’s the details, any help would really be appreciated as I don’t want to blow out a $500 radio by trying to fix what isn’t broken.

Equipped remote head:

S/T: HLN1467G

Kit NO: HLN6911G

Equipped chib -

S/T: HLN1468B

Kit NO: HLN6912B

Cable: HKN6191A high power

Donor head:

S/T: HLN1467H

Kit NO: HLN6911H

Cable: HKN6192A

I think you're making this harder than needed. You should be able to reuse the old flex and mount and just swap gray for black. The cable is the same, red to red and blue to blue. O5 is an O5 and should be fine. If it's been run on an APX, it might need to figure out what it's attached to now, but just leave it on and it'll be fine. If you were going W to O you'd need change it in CPS. If the brick's firmware is 20.50.07 to .10 it should be a 2 minute swap. If it's a little older it might need to sync. If it's ancient like below FW9, you might want to get it upgraded.
In a pinch the XTL2500 HKN608A will even work.

Problem if you have a black o5 head that has been on an APX you will need to hook it up to the XTL and do a control head sync to load the XTL firmware back into it.

Hi All, Rhanks so much for the response! I’m sorry I should have mention a couple things.

The radio that the head I want to replace is an XTS5 and the radio I want to take the head from is also and XTS5.

The XTS head that I want to replace is a remote head while the XTS donor head is attached to the brick.

I hope that makes sense

Ugh one more thing! The donor XTS is a lower power radio and the one I want to put it onto is a high power 110w radio

It's an XTL not an XTS

The actual front head won't matter then since it's a seamless swap.

High/med power is irrelevant to just swapping heads

If you are seeking an O5 Control Head for a remote unit, you should check eBay. Loose O5 control heads show up on eBay frequently. This may be the most economically approach to resolve your solution and with less headaches. Another approach you should explore, some resellers sell the XTL5000 700/800 Meg radios super cheap because there is essentially no hobby market for these radios and can not be legally used in an non-trunking environment by a non-government entity. These radio and controlheads usually will sell for less than $100 as a package. I would by the package for the controlhead and use the radio as a paperweight, door stop, wheel chuck, or a boat anchor.

Thanks all for the replies! So I think I basically just need a cable? The radio I want to replace the head on is a remote head. The donor radio I have, this is the radio with the new 05 head is not a remote head.

Im hoping I can just get a specific cable and connect the new 05 head to the remote head? I just have absolutely no idea what the model number of that cable would be and I also don’t know if I need to swap out any circuit boards in the remote head aswell?
