• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

New to the forum and need some help!
I picked up a couple of XTS 1500s and im looking to reprogram them.
Trouble is i went the cheap cable option way and purchased a programming cable with a rs232/db9 end
and also a rs232/db9 to usb converter cable. Now with the converter cable driver installed I cant get
my CPS to pick up the radio at all no matter what i try. Has anyone experienced this before who can help?
Any incite is much appreciated as google search and forum search here have revealed no results! :(
Thanks in advance.

You probably bought the wrong cable but since you haven't given us much details about it, it's hard to say.

R06.04.00 pictured and R16.01.00 not pictured

Here's the programming cable itself, says its for multiple models? I presume
This is probably the issue.

My adapter cable appears to be working fine after testing so will only
look into that more thoroughly if necessary.

Well, the picture of the CPS you posted won't work with your radio. In fact, it won't work for any ASTRO25 radio. You need ASTRO25 Portable CPS. Current version is R20.00.00.

I would just buy the proper USB cable rather than dicking around with a USB to serial converter.

First, the knock off cables or adapters hardly work and if they do and the drivers arent corrupt from the disc it came with which most the chinese knock off usb to serial drivers are, good luck if you don't brick a astro portable. By pic I can tell you that particular USB to serial will not work even if it says its working fine and good luck not bricking the radio reading or writing to it. Then you need the proper CPS mentioned above after applying for a MOL account, then signing ULA from Motorola and buying the CPS. You will need to provide the model and serial numbers when you order. This is for several reasons.

Again, as mentioned in many other posts. If you are building a house, keep using third party stuff. You will have plenty of bricks. The good news, this keeps technicians in business. The bad news is, being cheap winds up costing you more, which is again, good news for us.

I use a similar type Maxton serial cable to program my $65 MTS 2000, & $150 XTS 3000 radios, however for newer, more expensive radios I use the real Motorola programming cables w/o any adapters. If I brick a $65, or $150 radio, well than shame on me, but I will accept what happens on my cheap radios, but for my XTS 5000, or XPR 4550/6550 radios, I only use the real deal. I politely suggest you do the same thing.
