Last I recall the iogear guc232a was only one recommended from Motorola to use back in the cps days.
With drivers you'd have to find the one obviously which will run with xp. Believe it or not some older drivers may work fine.
I've never used a ativia but if I find any I'll let you know on my old stock pile of various drivers. Though I doubt I'd find those if I had one long ago for non radio use.
The cps software is windows based. Xp up to windows 10, some have success with using r20 with 7 and 8 or vista, I know a guy who uses a 5000 for ham and never had ability to upgrade or wanted to since he believes in analog and didn't need any dsp improvements, uses r14 or 15 since 2012 or so in windows 10 now without issue.
Next thing is keep in mind the serial to USB it is either all or nothing. There is "fake" chipsets out there with these USB cables thrown with either outdated or newer drivers the actual manufacturer of the legit cable is putting out. You may have to experiment and find a driver that's old to work. Ymmv.
Some manufacturers have choose checkers that you can download and authenticate the choose in the cable of its bogus or real.
If you bought it through a actual retailer and know it's real you're options are Uninstalling it, making sure it is fully removed, run the setup disk, or USB flash drive then once installed restart and then plug you're USB in.
Try to keep the USB in same port as I've seen one port be assigned to Com 1 (be sure you're Com 1 with you're cable with Motorola) then when put into another assign a new port that is high, with outdated or wrong driver.
Once you can verify it's installed proper see if you can use something on that cable besides a radio. If not then we have a driver issue and property one needs to be found to use with it which can be time consuming.
If it's knock off I'd toss it aside and get a iogear guc232a from a reputable seller. Motorola had once suggested those in past to use for usb. They also have updated drivers for 7/8 and I can verify it'll work in windows 10 however I've noticed buggy issues if it is higher than Com port 1 on default settings.
One issue too is it may work if it's also knock off but if it hangs on write to the radio then you may end up with a fail 00/xx code and may or may not be able to recover. Also keep in mind to have the settings as default in Com port in system.
Double check you're cps settings itself and be sure Com port 1 is selected and if it isn't see if you can assign Com port 1 to your cable. Then check the cps settings. USB option in cps as far as I know won't work as Com port setting in cps with the third party cables it'll have to be com port 1. At most 2 I never assign Motorola higher than 1.
Also be sure that you're write won't be super slow, while I've seen knock offs lag because of improper driver, or cable is whack it may still write but if it goes super slow just leave it and don't turn anything off at all. If it writes then good but keep in mind if it hangs way too long that it could fail to write and then a fail 00/xx code will pop up. Hopefully in that situation you can recover by writing the original saved plug back into it. Reading and hanging at read I have seen it fail on third party cables and then reboot and be fine however that is a Ymmv per person type of thing.
The longest I've seen a serial to usb hang on write was with some 5000s a shop had and tried to always cheap out on cables and anything else you can imagine the write took about 35 minutes and oddly didn't hang and fail. Reading longest I've seen hang and not fail is about 15 minutes.
In those conditions I wouldn't even wanna deal with myself and I sure wouldn't attempt a firmware bump at a slow speed as those, but in that situation it would be touch and go to recover from a fail code and attempting a firmware reflash if you have ability to have a ibutton around. I won't get into the unspoken as I don't condone that for mission critical and it is against rr policy to discuss those.
If I recall the r20.01.00 had issues where speed was slower than previous versions but not snail mail slow and they had patched it and just threw that out without any notes since they kept it same version. This is how you know if someone has a illegal copy cause they will say it is going too slow and then ask about failed writes and fail 00/xx while anyone else with legit licensed copy doesn't have the issue since they had most likely updated to what Mol replaced the issued r20.01.00. I recall something on that but not sure unless I'm mixing wit with another radio brand.
