To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

There are mods that will take it up to 512, but they are software driven, with files modified with a hex editor, and tedious stuff unless you really know what you're doing.

That said, your XTS3K that tops off at 470 MHz will still work at least a few MHz higher than that. When you're programming using Astro CPS you'll get a warning indicating that you are trying to program out of band, but it will allow you to continue and the radio will work fine. I listen to 472.1125 with my XTS3000 Model III with no problems at all.

Check http://www.batlabs.com for the mod I'm talking about, and if you are the least bit apprehensive about such things, don't do it.

Well everything between 473-476 is going to be a repeater input for the most part anyway. 476 and up is probably going to be a stretch. I can't speak from experience, but reading indicates to me probably not. Maybe someone with more experience in the matter can comment.

Yes, they will work comfortably up to and around 477/478MHz - I have done modifications to the CPS to receive there, but not transmit as I have no need. Taking it any further may cause VCO errors.

Hi,

Yes they will do 471MHz. Our agency has simplex channels between 471 & 472MHz and our XTS3Ks work on them whilst also working on our Smartzone system between 400-420MHz.

They really struggle above 477MHz and Moto don't warrant their performance above 470MHz.

Cheers,

Richard

Will they still operate IMBE mode properly outside of the rated bandsplit?? I've always heard they won't, but I've never had a reason to try it.

I just had mine, a 403-470 split, programmed for a couple of frequencies at around 471MHz, and although it gives you error messages, it takes them and seems to receive okay.

While we're talking about the XTS3000, is it possible to have the display light come on when a signal is received? Mine is programmed so that the top (purple) button turns on the backlight, and I know the time it remains on is programmable.

No, there's no option for it.

You can have the LED flash on incoming signals, but that is about it.

It does that now, it flashes red while it's receiving a signal.
I'm ready to try it out on 442.000 P-25 ! :D

I just performed the hex mod for the Astro CPS software that programs the XTS3000 as outlined in this link courtesy of Batlabs.

My XTS3000 is now receiving just fine up to the highest frequency I have programmed, which is 484.4375, and doing so quite nicely.

If you proceed with caution, the hex mod is quite simple. Like I stated before though, if you have any doubt, don't! As the poster of the mod indicates, he won't be responsible for dead radios...and nor will I for pointing you in the direction of the mod...but it worked dandy for me with no issues.

Edit: I neglected to indicate that what I programmed is RECEIVE ONLY.

Hey I thought that freq sounded familiar :D . It's up and I'll try to keep something up load enough to hear your call. Just gets a lil difficult to answer sometimes with the harmonics at home in the evening.
