• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I have a couple XTS3000s UHF 403-470mhz with the Motorola whip antenna. My question is in that band split would it damage the radio if I used a 7" 800mhz antenna? I really like the long Motorola antennas that have the "ball" at the end an I can only find those versions in 800mhz.

Thank you,
Tyler

If it didn't destroy the power amp, you sure would not like the performance of the radio using an incorrect antenna on it.

Moto does make a UHF antenna that is "styled" like the 800 you describe but it is a little shorter.

for all intents and purposes, your question was answered here.
http://forums.radioreference.com/commercial-radio-antennas/282937-different-antennas.html

Will it damage the radio? No on receive, maybe/probably on transmit. Is it going to work well. Nope. unless you are on a very well covered PS system (Which I don't think you are, see below), you are not going to get a good signal.

Why? You should not be picking an antenna based on how it looks, but rather it's tuning and gain for your application.

(If this paragraph comes across as insulting, I do not mean it that way). Can I ask what service these radios are for? XTS3ks are previous generation top of the line radios. They are not something the average person buys on a whim. Again, I do not mean to be rude, but you do not seem to know what you are doing. In another thread you said they will be "hooked up to a repeater".

Due to the fact that you want to talk between them, and your band-split choice, I will assume you want to use them on GMRS. In that case, here is the antenna I use on my UHF Motos. It is long and has the "ball" on the end, but is actually properly tuned for 460 mhz. I also use them on the UHF fleets I manage, and they work great.

Matt,

Thank You for your input. These radios were given to me by my fire dept.and they are for use with my security company that I have started which will be P25 (Yes, actual P25 P1 9600 baud trunking) Encrypted which I have gotten proper licensing from the FCC, I am in no way a professional but am striving to be in two way communications, I am an IT professional so I am respectively efficient with CPS and RSS (Legally Owned) and am learning more on the hardware technicalities such as antennas. I appreciate the link but I need them for 454.05 and 454.65 so I don't know if they'll work but I've never seen a portable antenna tuned to a single frequency? I also have 4 APX 4000XE uhf/vhf coming in which I am very excited about. I buy my radios and accessories buy look, that's just how I operate, not the most efficient way but that's just me. The 3000s will not be on the trunking system as they cannot do 9600 baud.

I have several questions, specifically about your wanting to use 9600 trunking trunking on two frequencies, and your methods of choosing equipment, but that is not the topic of this thread.

(Most) Portable antennas have rather wide bandwidth. A 460 tuned antenna will be just fine on 454. If you want a real Motorola Wide band antenna, I have several of these as well.

Here is a chart, Obviously this is for 12 meters, not 440, but it's the same Idea. The center frequency will have the best SWR, but the antenna is still usable for a while to either side of that. Especially with commercial portable antennas, where the graph will be much flatter.

The antenna in the eBay link above is the APX style one, but I guess it works on XTS's as well...

My radio has the one I think you're thinking of. Check out Wiscomm, they're bound to have it.

It's the same look you want. Except this one is tuned for UHF.
