• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Not sure what you're getting at. By definition Astro means IMBE digital voice. Assuming the XTS 5000 is flashed to do IMBE, it'll do it.

By definition Astro means digital voice (period). It was Motorola's name for their digital line.

The XTS5000 is capable of IMBE digital voice.

Older radios such as the XTS3000 and Astro Spectra/Saber were capable of both VSELP and IMBE. These radios were also marketed under the Astro name.

Don't forget that just because it says 'ASTRO" doesn't mean you'll be talking digital.
By defintion, ASTRO means digital capable with proper programming and flash.

Also, don't forget the ASTRO is a BRAND name without a specific TECHNICAL definition!

Products labled ASTRO include Motorola's original Pre-P25 digital technology (that people here like to call VSELP) and Motorola's current P-25 technology (the some people here like to call IMBE).

Astro Portables: .........Digital Type:.......................System Type:
Astro Saber............... VSELP or IMBE...........Trunking and Conventional
XTS1500.........................IMBE.............................Conventional
XTS2500.........................IMBE....................Trunking and Conventional
XTS3000.........................IMBE....................Trunking and Conventional
XTS3500.........................IMBE.............................Conventional
XTS5000.........................IMBE....................Trunking and Conventional
SSE5000.........................IMBE....................Trunking? and Conventional

Astro Mobiles:
Astro Spectra............VSELP or IMBE.............Trunking and Conventional
Astro Spectra Plus...........IMBE.....................Trunking and Conventional
XTL5000.........................IMBE.....................Trunking and Conventional

The type of digital the radio is capable of depends on the firmware version and it must be flashed for digital operation. VSELP and analog only Astro Sabers and Astro Spectra are relatively common but occasionally you run accross an XTS3000 that is VSELP or has analog firmware. Pretty much everything else if it is flashed for digital operation is IMBE because these radios were released after official support for VSELP was cancelled.

There were a few early XTS-3000 that were VSELP. They are few and far between.

Cleveland has a about 200 XTS3000 Vselp Radios.

Trenton has a good cache of them too but as compared to the thousands upon thousands of IMBE xts3000's, they can be called few and far between.

It will be interesting to see how long these few cities can hold out. VSELP was offically cancelled by Motorola a couple years ago now which means they are now unable to replace broken units or expand their system.

I would also speculate that when they finally do switch to IMBE they will go to full time encryption. Once you get used to (relatively) no one listening its hard to go back.
