Was able to acquire a mint unit of this type in trade while awaiting my ham ticket. Checking on google, could not find a copy of the Operator Manual. Anyone have any ideas or valid sources? Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This was a fairly popular rig back in the 1970's and many are still around today. You might try navigating around on some of the ham websites. Some I find helpful are:

http://www.eham.net

http://www.qrz.com

http://www.arrl.org

http://www.ac6v.com

If you can't find a lead to what you need on one of these sites, you won't find it! The above are very useful for many things to ham ops.

Good luck and congrats on getting your license.

Hi there, Good luck with the boat anchor. I used to have a 101 EX and a 101 ZD

For a paper copy, try...duh....www.hamradiomanuals.com I've bought several out of print manuals there.

And you can keep a lookout on Ebay. Enter it as a....I forget what they call it....a notification search or something...and you'll get an email alerting you that someone has posted the item. You can set that for up to a year or so. I use that all the time to get notified of things I'm looking for.

And hope you don't live in a large metropolitan area where folks may still be sniffing TV out of the air. Those 101's use the so-called " TV Sweep " tubes and are notorious for coming in on all of your neighbors TV's, stereos, phones ect....

But effective and fun rigs. Hope you enjoy excellent success with yours !

Hi guys,

I once had an FT-101E and had no problems with TVI.

"Those 101's use the so-called " TV Sweep " tubes and are notorious for coming in on all of your neighbors TV's, stereos, phones ect...."

Sweep tubes (horizontal scan output) and many otherTV tubes were commonly used because they were dirt cheap, you could get them at any TV repair shop and could easily handle the high voltage and short duty cycle encountered in CW and SSB work. When operated within operational parameters they generated no more spurious emissions than any other tubes.

FYI, the common transmitting tube 807 was once used in early RCA B&W sets, later the 5 pin base was changed to octal and became the most common sweep tube of all, the 6BG6. Early on I noticed the internal structure was the same and used it in many RF experiments that called for an 807 because I had no source for it at the time. I only learned of it's history much later, strange I should pick up on that long after the fact. (;->)

One thing to note, the WWV 10MHz band switch position and crystal are of course very useful, I don't remember exactly but maybe it could be used today on 30M. One bit of caution, if the 11M crystal is in it's socket, TAKE IT OUT! Many of those rigs were used illegaly on CB with the yellow wire clipped but I won't go into that, just keep it legal. You don't want to end up like the latest guy the FCC pasted to the wall, he's not permitted to even own any CB gear for the next five years.

Thanks all!!! Will be sitting for my General Ticket on Oct 30. Have been aceing the QRZ.com samples. Can't wait to get back on the air after an absense of nearly forty years! Hell, I even got my code speed back to around 28 clean just by listening in on 40 and 20 over the last six months.

Hi elk and readers,

AWRIGHT! Now watch the FCC drop the code requirement. (;->) Hey, before I open a can of worms, I'll say >when< it is because everybody expects it, the code won't be going away any time soon. There are many newbies with a keen interest in a time tested viable mode and one of the most communications effecive one there is. OK, you can copy 28 but how's your fist? (;->)

BTW, scanner buffs could use a dose of Morse, transmitters often use CWIDs sent without the PL tone. Leave the PL off and there will be no doubt what you're hearing.

CW is the only place you'll find me on HF. With very rare exceptions (like today when I demo the ham rig to the kid's cub scout den) if you hear my call on SSB, it's a bootlegger.

Good luck Bruce, let us know how you make out. I wonder if you are going to Middletown for the test.
