But, yeah, the signal to noise ratio from the OP's perspective hasn't been very good.

I worked my 2980r over. First 1 had NO carbon paste under the finals.this 1 as soon as i got it,i put extra paste under finals.long chat with fan where speaker used to be temps crawl up to 115 and 2 mibutes after unkeying its down to 95 degrees on 75 degree day. Its in its 3rd year n still puts out 80 watts.
Yaesu is pretty notorious for that. I know of 3 people that have (or had) the 2980 and the results were all the same. I guess there's a heat shrink paste shortage. "rolls eyes". Good you got yours going patched up and is still going for you. I have run a 2980 but never owned one, we used one for an event we were doing some time back as more of a net control point and it worked well. I thought personally the radio received pretty well, which I'd expect from a mono band radio.
I do not know of anyone that has the 3185 to even ask about it. Should I find anyone that actually has one I'll see what they think. I know personally when I ask for a recommendation on something, I'm smart enough to have already done the research, and am looking for an honest hands on review from someone that has that particular device. I can only "assume" you're looking for the same.

Yes im asking if its worth the extra $$$. If i see it is i will give the 2980 to a young person who is not got much money.
I gave 3 base antennas to young people who passed test but only could afford a $27. Baofeng. I gave an icom 2200 to 1.
Around here i can reach repeaters iver 100 mile radius but when i got no work im home n never hear a soul on repeaters.called out several times nobody anymorw. Byt that hand full of dx friends were on simplex.
I even have wires set up on my yaesu ft 200 n not many on that either

Hey i discoveed 1 for sale new $200. Asked why are you seling it might be interested... he got pissed id ask him a respected operator a stupid bothersome question. He is on another site. I will be sure and not ask him crap or say id buy from hin. Nuff jerks runnin free n we dont need attitude like that. But its my opinon . Im 70 n wish up tite people would take a chill pill n enjoy life
