Although it say's automatic mode change, does the Yaesu ft-70 receive milair in am ?. I am looking into going with either a ft-60, or ft-70 for my amateur ht/scanner.Thank's for any help.

Apparently yes. Did you look at Welcome to Yaesu.com and download the manual? The manual should give you a definitive answer. I'd expect you will need a different antenna though.

Thank you. I found the part about automatic mode, but in the spec's it states for the milair band "fm".

Above 300Mhz it receives AM, but below 300 it is FM. I tested it with RT Systems software and tried to program 243.00 and FM is the only modulation choice. Not a good radio for mil-air.

FT-60 has the same specs as the FT-70. AM is available only above 300Mhz. A good scanner will probably outperform a ham HT or mobile for out of band coverage.

I think the Yaesu vx-6r is the only Yaesu ht to cover the milair band in the correct mode. I gave mine to a friend.

I have a VX-6R and it will cover military aircraft. The VFO defaults to FM on that band, but by pressing the "MODE" button you can switch to AM. I still believe that a dedicated scanner is a better choice. Amateur radio specs are only guaranteed in the ham bands. However, since the VX-6R can cover the 220 band it may do better on mil-air than you might think. I don't listen to mil-air so I can't speak from actual experience.

I know it's been discontinued but the VX-7R covers all mil-air in AM mode.

The VX-6R is still available from Universal Radio in Ohio and probably elsewhere. I've had mine for more than 10 years. A solid radio, about the only thing I would recommend buying at the outset is a second battery.

Ft-70dr at 243.00 AM use menu #47 Rx MOD to change to AM then use keyboard to save to memory.

Sounds like rt systems has a glitch? Email them for verification. They usually fix glitches within a business day or 2 with an update.

Edit- seems to work in yaesu's ADMS-10 software, just uncheck "AMS" and change "Operating Mode" to AM in the drop down.

I was disappointed at first when I tried with some Yaesu handhelds. I believe I had to make a change in the menu first, but the FT-2DR and the FT-1XDR can also receive Mil-Air in AM by changing the mode. I have some local mil-air stuff in there and it RX fine.

I am eventually going to buy another vx-6r or a ft-60/70. I gave my 6r to my buddy, and he studied for, and took the entry level ham exam, and passed. I would like to do the same. I am more a scanner listener though.

Covering mil air is not the same thing as actually receiving mil air. My FT-60 had stellar mil air reception. My VX-1R (both of them) also did pretty good.

Not so with the VX-3R and VX-8R, both of which allow AM mode in the mil air band. The 3R is 100% deaf on mil air, and the 8R is just about as deaf.

So I suspect most newer Yaesu HTs aren't good on mil air.

Thanks for pointing this out. Something is wrong with RT Systems. ADMS has problems with memory banks on the FT-70dr. That's why I switched to RT Systems.

RTsystems put out an update on the AM issue....now RTsystems has choices on 243.000 of AM, AM Narrow, FM, and FM Narrow. Interesting.
