First off, this is not a negative statement regarding Yaesu. I like my gear. Was going about changing programming on the FT5D (Ht) between the handset and laptop. All of suddden I could not find my sd card. I knew I inserted it in the radio. After blaming the cat that was helping, and my aging memory, I figured it was gone. Then I did a search to find out this has happened before. When I shook the radio I could hear it rattling inside. Ok, the design engineers missed a gap. Purpose of this posting is to make others aware to PAY ATTENTION while inserting the sd card in the YAESU FT5D HT so it doesn't end up in the black hole. Off to the repair center it goes. (sorry n9upc)

I had the exact same thing happen. The foam that they have beside the card slot gives enough resistance when putting the SD card into the radio that it feels like it is going in correctly, but the SD card is just sliding inside the radio.

I went online and watched a video on how to disassemble an FT3D, and followed the same steps to disassemble my FT5D to extract the SD card. After I got the cover off, I was able to tilt the radio and have the SD card fall out. (The radio was just a month old when I did this..)

I've been super careful ever since that incident when I am working with the SD card on the FT5D.

I suppose that the warranty could be voided if opened. I am located outside the USA and had assumed that warranty service would have likely involved international shipping charges, so I took my chances and very carefully got the job done without breaking anything. The radio is still performing well about a year later. I'll admit that it wasn't the easiest thing to get open, but it was something that I didn't rush into.
