I see in the manual that a variety of squelch types can be chosen. But I cannot find where to set the level....

Are you talking about a Yaesu FTM-6000R?
From the article:
“To adjust the squelch level, push the SQL/BACK key in the upper right-hand corner of the control head, and turn the DIAL knob below it to mute the background noise. Pushing the SQL/BACK key again (or waiting 2 seconds) will return the SQL level screen to the normal operating screen.”
Chaplain, you are most kind. Thank you for writing and I will try this out today. 99% of the channels are quiet on this second hand radio I bought. But 152.285 which is a system for medical helicopters (which I do tech support for on their avionics) has been breaking squelch randomly and is annoying. Other radios nearby don't, so I think if I tighten the squelch a bit... I will resume my nice quiet existence.
And yes, it is an FTM6000R. I think I shall print a paper copy of the manual today as well.
