To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have a Low Band 99 channel 37 - 48 MHz FTL-1011.

Does anybody know the maximum out of band coverage? (with and without realigning the VCO).

I want to program the radio on 50 - 52 MHz.

I'm also wondering whether its possible to program the radio on 29 MHz without any major hardware mods.

The radio is new old stock (plastic on LCD).

The radio is programmed on 4 frequencies : 37, 42, 48 and 50 MHz. I presume the 37, 42 and 48 MHz freqs are the "factory" default Low, Mid and High test frequencies.

I'm thinking that somebody has previously "tested" whether the radio will work on 6m by programming in 50 MHz...but I might be wrong.

The radio's RX sensitivity on 42 and 48 MHz is OK (not tested 37 MHz) but its a bit deaf on 50 MHz..so I assume I will need to realign the front end.

According to the service manual, RX sensitivity alignment is NOT done on the Mid test frequency (ie 42 MHz) but the Low band edge frequency (ie 37 MHz). Any idea why? If I align the radio on, say 51 MHz, is this not optimal for extended coverage below 50 MHz? Squelch alignment is done on the Mid 42 MHz test frequency. Maybe using the Low band edge frequency rather than the Mid frequency for RX sensitivity alignment is a service manual error?

The programming software for the 99 channel version is CE-7 version 3.3 (or newer) which is DOS based.

Thanks.

A 37-50 split to 29? NO. You'll need the lower split version and it still might lack sensitivity.
For 6 meter I'd suggest tweaking the VCO. You will lose some of the lower end, but you'll have full 50-54.
As for why they did something, I can't help/answer. I have similar why questions with the VX-4000/5500/6000s.
