Just received one of these radios could any one tell me if I will be able to receive utilities frequencies or government, marine and others in the HF bands, also does any one have any interesting frequencies I could receive with this radio, I really don't know what is in this radios range I have had scanner for 35 years but never had a HF receiver like the VR-5000. I have looked at a couple of lists on the web but I don't think I can receive these frequencies. any info would be of great help to me, or where I can find frequency lists that this radio can receive, I am in Canada, Southern Ontario so I don't know if there are a lot of utility frequencies that I could pick up. I have been picking up a lot of shortwave frequencies like the BBC, Canada International and many others but I can't seem to find utility frequencies.
regards,
Steve

See my message regarding weather, hurricane and digitals in this forum for several links that will get you started. Many utility stations do not follow exact schedules (some do, but not all), so you need to know where to go to listen.

In addition, here's another place with a *huge* list of freqs;

http://www.monitoringtimes.com/html/mttopHF.html

Now if you're going to manage all these freqs, you will need something of a PC program for the Vr5000. There aren't too awful many, but there are 2 that have associated Yahoo groups, so you can join them and ask questions before you buy:

and here's one more:

You might also consider joining the VR5000 Yahoo group; they may give you a better idea of popular programs that work with this radio:

and finally, don't forget the ODXA- a well respected group and based in Ontario - I've got several friends up there...

Couple of starters for you in the Great White North...11.232 5.717 Both are Canadian Military Frequencies. Base identified as "Trenton Military." I've heard a few SAR missions on those frequencies

Both frequencies are Upper Sideband

Thanks for all the information on the vr-5000

:)
Thanks to KA3JJZ @ AEMTKIERAN for all the info you posted to get me started with the VR-5000 receiver I just started a search between 2003 and 2599 Mhz to see if I can pick up anything in this area of the band, I have it set for USB, I see the vr-5000 only goes to 2599.99998 Mhz so I I'm out of luck as far as Monitoring Times Hot 1000 HF Frequencies Compiled by Larry Van Horn, N5FPW MT Assistant Editor I can only program the first 40 or 41 frequencies on the list, the radio won't go any higher for the other frequencies I guess.

well if you read the frequencies right you would have found out that hf is below 30 mhz. what you just keyed in was s band satellite. now you have to do it all over again. This time key it in as 25.555mhz instead of the other way

Well I think you can see that I really am out of my realm when it comes to Shortwave receivers, or it may have something to do with not being able to walk and chew gum at the same time, thanks for the info. I saw frequencies like this and I thought you put them in like 3078. / 3080. mHz

re-antenna's

Just curious, Steve...what are you using for an HF antenna?
I have a Discone 40 feet up in the air, And I just got myself a 70 foot longwire antenna I am going to see if I can run the longwire along my wall along the ceiling there is no metal or steal to mess up the signal so I don't know how it will preform. I have been listening to The Hams and have picked up CQS from
Mexico
North Carolina
Boston Mass.
Italy
Florida
Texas
With the discone, still have not heard any Marine or Aircraft In the HF frequencies, I would think maybe when it gets latter I might be able to receive something in this area it's only 19:30, I don't think I'm in a really good area to receive a lot of Marine or Aircraft (Fort Erie Ont. Canada, Across Lake Erie from Buffalo NY), I really don't know. I'll try and get the longwire up tonight and give it a try. Shortware stations from all over the world are comming in all day, as it gets latter in the evening I'm picking up more and more of them, really strong signals on a lot of them. Just started to receive 7.50700 a military net, comming in very strong, 13.08900 computer generated voice (weather broadcast).

I'm here a lot
How open is the area near your residence?

When we used to do DX'ing at a friends cottage, we would tie up a
weight of some sort to the end of the longwire and whip it around ,let it go and hang up high in a tree branch.

Please do not attempt this if you are in an urban area with power lines in any proximity
If you can safely accomplish this, you may notice great results.

Moderators- if this seems to be an unsafe suggestion, please delete
this post. I'm hoping though that people will be prudent and use
common sense.

I don't have a tree close by, I have a wall in my apartment/top floor that I could run the longwire along the wall.ceiling for around 40 feet and then I would have to make a sharp left turn to run the other 30 feet along the wall/ceiling. I don't know if this would work, or I could just run the 40 feet along the wall and cut the wire. Can't get the longwire outside in this area.
