YAESU VX-7R low audio problem?

I've been out of the HT loop for a while, having owned an FT-50 and VX-5R. I'm interested in the VX-7R but I still am not sure if they ever fixed the low audio transmit problem caused by the membrane on the mic. Did they eventually fix it and what production numbers are 'post problem'.
