I have this radio. Definitely not a bad HT.
Instead of the stock duck, I use the Diamond SRH77CA Dual Band (2 m /70 CM) antenna. This antenna is magic with this radio. I've managed to reach repeaters 25-30 miles away. No kidding! I didn't think it was possible.
I could probably reach further on 70cm but not too many distant 70cm repeaters to try this out. If you buy this antenna you will not be disappointed in its performance. The only downside is it is pretty tall, 15" long. I also use the BNC version of this antenna for my scanner, and it is a wonderful scanning antenna. When folks are telling me I'm getting "near full quieting, what rig are you using?" this can only be a testament to the performance. Then again, rightly so, this antenna is about the suggested whip length for 2 meters, so it's no wonder it performs well.
As for 50mhz, no handheld antenna is going to perform well at this frequency, they don't make one long enough. The required size of a vertical whip at that frequency would have to be several feet long to be resonant, which would be too long for any practical use on an HT radio, let alone the stress on the SMA mount.
Anyways, hopefully you have your amateur license, and intend to work those with your VX-7R instead of intentions to freeband and harass people from other radio services. My VX-7R is actually freebanded, because I purchased it from a friend who was intending to do all kinds of harmful interference. He interfered with Dallas Police Department __once__ and in my presence, after he did this I scared the crap out of him about the methods to track him down. Soon after he wanted to sell it and gave me quite a deal!:lol::lol::lol: It seems Dallas PD has backup unpublished frequencies in the event of interference like this, as they switched over for about an hour.
