Whenever I'm in the city lately, I've been noticing that SOME yellow cabs have these large whip antennas (similar appearance as CB radio antennas) on their roofs. Does anyone know what frequencies they are using or are they just using standard CB radio frequencies? I thought for a long time they just communicated using cell phones, but now with all of these laws not allowing them to use phones in cars, it seems that some cabs are going back to using 2-way radios again. Any ideas would be welcomed.

When I was a TLC Inspector (1987-1992) I stopped many a cab with CB radios. Out of curiosity I took my frequency counter to work and found that almost every one of them operated on 27.645, what was commonly called channel 64.

I'd hazzard a guess that they're still there.

Phones are still allowed in cars, taxis, buses...

N2ZGE,

The state vehicle and traffic law prohibits the use of wireless telephones while driving without a handsfree device. You'll still find a great many cabbies using wireless telephones (sometimes while driving and holding the phone to their ear).
