I obtained a map from one website (can't recall the URL right now) that shows all New York Center sectors, including TRACONs. On the map, all of the sectors are numbered.

Text listings on various websites show frequencies associated with named sectors. I need to find the correspondence between numbers and names. Can anyone help?

The names should match a city, county, major landmark, body of water, or anything else you can think of that would lie within that numbered sector. It might also be an airway intersection that's within the sector. As far as High, or Low, I think your just going to have to listen to hear what altitudes they are assigning aircraft in that sector.

ZNY has a lot of relatively small sectors. Also, not all of the names appear to be listed on the websites that I've seen. Guessing the names is asking for mistakes.

I use to assume the same thing... Strangely enough, I looked up the coordinates for a few transmitters in ZLA once, and they were far from the obvious location that you would have thought they should be at, just going by the name. For instance, one is named for a spot in the mountains outside L.A. but the coordinates are actually for a hill much farther up the central valley. I have no idea why they would do that, or if it's just some mistake.

Well, I'm not exactly assuming anything. The transmitters themselves might not be in that sector, no one said they had to be. I know of areas where the transmitters are way out side of the sectors like upwords of 25 - 50 miles. The sectors might also be named for an Arrival or Departure Gate into or out of that sector which if that is the case then it wouldn't be anything related to something in the area at all. And if you really want to get technical most controllers refer to the sectors as to what position on the floor they reside which is all by Letters. This is how aircraft are handed off or identified to different sectors on the radar scopes and computers.

Thanks, Jim! Exactly what I wanted. The linked PDF file that Paul mentioned is a treasure as well.

I have seen a Liberty Sector on some lists. Where is that?

The Liberty Sector is one of five in the NY TRACON. They handle departures from all of the airports in the NY Metro area and put them in trail to hand off to ZNY. They also work arrivals into SWF. .

The other sectors in the TRACON are Newark, Kennedy, LaGuardia and Islip.

Thanks! I guess that NY TRACON would also handle HPN, correct?

Paul, thanks for the great list. I've found a couple of apparent changes.

134.900 LGA Final - I heard an aircraft reporting ascent from FL350 to FL370
135.200 NY App HMV Remote - Aircraft heard reporting FL370

From another source, I have LGA Final listed at 128.800.

Dave - this is Michael Gray, brand new as of 11/30. Im at the RDU AFSS, and enjoy finding frequencies. I have the ones for ZDC and ZTL; let me see if I can call up and get the ones for ZNY - for those reading this who are unfamiliar, "ZDC" means Washington Air Traffic Control Center, and "ZTL" is the Center at Atlanta and "ZNY" is New York Center.

Michael, weclome aboard!

My ARTCC monitoring interests include ZNY, ZBW, and ZOB. Any updates are appreciated. I know there must be some ZBW changes because I'm picking up traffic on frequencies other than the ones I already have listed. It's tough to figure out which sectors are affected.

134.9 is definately in use by the NY Tracon LGA sector, but it is also assigned to ZOB (Cleveland Center) Mansfield Sector at the Mansfield, OH RCAG site.

135.2 is also assigned to ZDC (Washington Center) Sector 27, Liberty at the Johnsonville, NC RCAG site.

Not sure of your location and setup but maybe those are the Center transmissions you heard?

Either one (ZDC or ZOB) would be pretty spectacular from here in Albany, NY.

OK guys - I hope this doesnt get me in trouble. Im in Flight Service and get a CD-Rom update every eight weeks, with ALL the freqs for ALL the sectors, though they don't give the sector numbers. That is in the ZDC and ZNY (etc) Training books or Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). Isn't government fun? If the lat/longs of the transmitters help, give me a week or two to figure this out. Or, if someone is willing to look over a single center, with the gobledy gook that goes along with it, I would really appreciate it!! My e-mail is "michale@nc.rr.com" -- just send me a note asking for a specific center, and I will send you that part of the disk (good old cut and paste). I figure that this stuff is posted in the green Airport/Facility Directories and the military's IFR book, so it's not like I'm sending you all some possible terrorist activity. Any takers?
