APD, AFR, LCSO are now online and encrypted. VFD & ALH EMS will be online by the end of summer.

Another dinosaur goes extinct! My grandfather used to have a console radio that came with police frquencies. We would listen for hours. I no longer need to own a scanner , it was another source of emergency info. An end of an "ERA".

yup . for the life of me i still don't understand why a fire department would want to encrypt. I have always said radio salesmen are always trying to make a buck . Using the line homeland security / fcc mandates the use of encryption . But the world keeps spinning and eggs are getting higher .

Motorola makes it easy to encrypt. They pretty much include ADP encryption in most of their radios. Sure it is an add on but when buying large quantities, they pretty much just throw it in. The salesmen make their buck on the sale of radios in quantity.

Why you ask? I'll give you a good example... Go to Facebook... search for Decatur Morgan County Scanner. I think that's the name, or close enough. They blocked me for telling the truth and calling them out on something. There has been more than one instance where families have heard about the death or serious injury of a loved from that page before the Coroner or other public safety agency can make the official notification. Used to be, agencies didn't care that people listened on the scanner. There was a scanner at every corner store and half the people in a community had one. People listened and that was it. Now, with the internet and all of the criminals that rely on the internet for their crimes, some of the info exchanged between responders and dispatchers is a PII/PHI nightmare. Do you want your name, DOB, address, drivers license number, and any other info about you all over the internet? With Fire agencies running more medical than fires these days, PII/PHI is a real concern.

I saw another post that said they're going to start holding agencies accountable later this year for those very reasons. Since it seems that nothing on this new system is going to be in the clear, I'm afraid this is going to be the new trend going forward. Agencies that are currently in the clear will have to flip the big E switch themselves, and then it's game over. Enjoy listening to McDonald's drive thru chatter.

You might be right, wouldn't surprise me really. I haven't been to McDonald's in a long time but I assumed some locations were still using old-school analog but I could be wrong.
