Bow ties?!

So I just watched "The China Syndrome" on Turner Classic Movies. There is a car accident scene in the movie showing a CHP Trooper, in uniform, helmet included, wearing a blue BOW TIE!

Is that authentic for the early seventies?

It's authentic to this day. That is the dress uniform ("class A") for a CHP motor officer.

Dunno about that, but I would highly suspect them to be either clip-on or velcro release.

They are just that, clip on and velcro, that's all they use. But now they can use a blue dickie instead, except of course during inspections.

I would think that a real bow tie would pose choking / strangulation / getting caught in machinery operating at very high speeds and snapping your neck / advantage for a combatant in an altercation types of hazards.

It was just so strange to see it portrayed at a car accident scene...
