I laughed like heck at the Captain going on about it being "300 horspower for the cops but the civilian version is a smaller v6 with less power"

True, but public safety models can be ordered without the California Emissions package by agencies, and that does free up a few ponies. Not sure how much, but might be a bit.

Also, they probably get them with better axle ratios than the average schmuck on the street does.

I wonder how they handle ? I can see these used for commercial detail or mountain use ....but for traffic ....seems silly when they could go with the sedan version. Now I got study new head lights again . Lol

From what I was told, the sedan could not handle all of the equipment that the CHP carries along with 4 adults. It exceeded the allowed weight. The Utility has a higher GVW.

That is scary..4). People and it's over loaded. I never thought about how much the equipment and radio weigh. Partition, push bar, light bar, ar-15 , shotgun, jumper cables, first aid, fire extinguisher, water, full size spare, console, mdt, radar, antennas, bean bag gun, spot lights, video gear, map lights, . How in hell they get it out.

Not to mention 3 or 4 mobile radios, two computers, all the electronics, and a second battery in the trunk, then run it all at 120mph for a while. This is one of the reasons you see the big American cars doing this stuff. Not much else will stand up to that kind of abuse.

The Sergeant said he thinks this may have been the first high speed pursuit in any of the new Explorers. Talking with him, it's interesting how they're having to change some of their tactics with the larger vehicle, and the later versions will have full wrap-around push bumpers to protect the front valence from damage. If you look closely, it's all one big single piece, and from what he's saying, quite expensive to replace.

The Ecoboost engine is not available on the 2013 Interceptor Utility. The only model engine available is the 3.7L TI-VCT V6 FFV.

See here: 2013 Ford Police Interceptor | All-New Police Interceptor Law Enforcement Sedans & SUVs | Ford.com - Sedan
and page 7 here: http://www.ford.com/resources/ford/...pdfs/2014_PoliceInterceptorBrochurev1Rain.pdf

To me, 307 horsepower is still more than adequate when you consider gear ratio and the driving prowess of the trooper...and the radio:D but I'm sure more than a few twin-turbo Ecoboosts will find their way into more than a few agencies. I know they ran superchargers in some Crown Vics around here. Just like Leno's chief, they tend to not advertize what's up their sleeve.

I actually shot this story. We were the first media outlet to do anything with the new PIUVs.

We brought along one of our Explorers for comparison

Lots of funny little things that didn't make it into the story... ;-)

Best part, was during the shoot, officer Hsu says "Go ahead and blow past us if you need to get ahead of us for shots" Not every day you can cruise past a police car and not get pulled over.
