data tags???

ok i have noticed some frequency listings for my area have ID tags that say data.. they are in the 800 numbers.. what is the data tag?? and can is it for just data meaning you wont hear anything or is it for talking on for the police also...

Those freqs are used for Mobile Data terminals in the police cars, the computers they use to look up tags and personal info on a subject.
All you will here is a data stream, no voice communications. Its my understanding that the data is encrypted and is illegal to descramble.

It is encrypted (versus scrambled) - but I'll share something with you: it's not that difficult to decypher! A USRP2 will deal with it real time (there are couple guys who concentrate on writing up open source code to use specifically with the USRP2 - it's on the 'net for all to use!!!)
