Are EAM's still transmitted on HF any longer ?

I remember the Sky King days, but it's been years since I listened to them.

What are the current active frequencies ? Or is it all satellite now ?

Oh yes they're still very much around - they are heard on the HF GCS system. Click on the link for more.

Listen to 11175 USB for a day and you're bound to hear at least one EAM! 8992 USB also is very active.

Not much left around here that's military, so it will probably have to be HF.

Oh you'd be surprised. I'd be willing to bet the offshore area is ripe with refueling and exercises, even if there's no base nearby. In addition, I'd also be willing to bet that the major airports, ARTCC and TRACON has more than a few UHF frequencies set up to keep the mil flights aware of what the civilians are doing, as well as coordinating through their airspace. I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss it right off the bat....73s Mike

Depending on where you live, you might be able to receive EAM's on 311.000 MHz AM modulation. I'm not sure if that's the only thing they use that frequency for, but I know they broadcast EAM's there along with the HF frequencies. Unfortuantely, no, you won't be able to recieve the HF frequencies, but you can give 311.0 a try. And, by the way, NO question is a dumb question.

Yes I've tried UHF air comms without very good result.

The offshore training areas are a bit far for me to hear much (couple of mountain ranges in the way), although I do get comms into and out of a local federal airbase, an International Airport, and some stuff that's high enough for me to hear out of Travis AFB.

I'm working on a load out for my PCR-1000 so I can scan MilAir and then another bank for HF comms.

UHF MilCom takes a bit of persistance and patience. There should be a ton of it in the Bay area. Try the CA forum for scanner lists. If you look at the MD state forum, there is a sticky group on there of Mil-Air monitors in the Capital that are quite active. That will give you some idea of what may be going on where you are.

Mostly is is searching for new stuff and scanning the UHF ARTCC published freqs.

I have heard about 15 EAMs the past hour. Some from Andrews and 2 from Lajes.

As a kid in the 70's, I've spent many, many hours tied to my shortwave receiver just to hear those "Skyking, Skyking...(cryptic message)...Do not reply" messages, wondering if they were SAC, NORAD or NIKE Site messages. I was given an old Collins Military receiver/ transmitter & power supply from my 5th grade teacher. I think he knew I was gonna be an electronics freak when I made a binary-to-decimal converter for my 5th grade science project. He (along with my Dad) knew that I was heading for the EE Dept for sure. I spent thousands of hours monitoring EAM's, HCJB-Quito Ecuador, Radio Havana, CQ-DX contests, ship-to-shore telephone conservations and everything else that the 2-12 MHZ SW band had to offer.

11175 busy as heck tonight. Caught a B52 over the Pacific somewhere, a TC135 trying to get through tstorms at Offutt and then a Special Forces MC130 into Alaska.

Then the eams started. McClellan must be repeating because it is l/c in LA

Now that Russia has begun a new cold war era we may get more military HF activity. Since the two Russian bombers (TU95's) surprised US forces in excercies off Guam on Aug 9th the Russian Bear and China have made some strange moves thats included the two countries doing an excercise in Russia with their armies and on Aug 18th Russia began regular mair missions that had stopped in 1992 with the collapse of the Russian economy. However due to high oil prices Russia is making a comeback. And along with it the HF freqencies should come back to life as US forces will have to readjust and start the old cold war bomber flights again as well.
