While providing the live feed and monitoring for new talk groups via Pro96Com when I checked this morning it seems that Radio Service is messing around with encryption. This might be a sign that some channels might soon become encrypted.

From the Pro96Com log:

4/29/2011 8:43 Group (Enc) 00-0085 851.5375 770 Radio Ser.2 748000 TG: 257 DT: 4/29/11@8:39
4/29/2011 8:43 Group (Enc) 00-0005 851.0375 770 Radio Ser.2 748000 TG: 257 DT: 4/29/11@8:39
4/29/2011 8:44 Group (Enc) 00-0103 851.65 770 Radio Ser.2 748000 TG: 257 DT: 4/29/11@8:39
4/29/2011 8:44 Group (Enc) 00-0165 852.0375 770 Radio Ser.2 748000 TG: 257 DT: 4/29/11@8:39

Just thought I'd put this up for anyone else who monitors this system. I'll continue to monitor the system via Pro96Com to see if anything changes, if anything I'd expect the sheriff ops channels to go encrypted before anything else.

Until someone has official word that all TGs will be encrypted then
this is much ado about nothing.
There are many encrypted TGs on VIPER. They comprise of SRT/SWAT/Drug/Investigation TGs.
The talkgroup in question might be used for one of the above reasons and not routine day to day comms.

True, that's why I said I would expect the Sheriff OPs channels to go encrypted if anything. Not saying everything is going to go encrypted but for those who monitor the system with their own scanners and one day can't figure out why the OPs channels are sounding all funky/not coming in then they would know why.

Just keeping a heads up on what I'm seeing happening on the system is all.

Encryption is becoming more and more of a every day thing across the country. No one now days should be surprised when a system, talk group, or channel gets encrypted.

*sigh* responses like this are why encryption threads are some of my least
favorite topics. Statements like the above only fuel the "OMG!! EVERYTHING IS BEING ENCRYPTED!! THE WORLD IS ENDING!! HIDE THE WOMEN, CHILDREN & DOGS!!" crowd. In North Carolina, encryption is not becoming "more of an every day thing".
Sure, agencies have the capability to encrypt talkgroups and some have.
But, since this is the NC Forum, encryption in NC still is not something to fear.
For heaven sakes, This thread started with radio service testing with a few talkgroups.
This in no way means that
(a) the entire system will be encrypted
and
(b) this is only speculation and nothing more.
Note: kicktd: I appreciate the info you posted and I do understand your intent with posting it. :) Thanks for keeping us updated.
I just know that threads like this bring out the "sky is falling" folks anytime the encryption word is brought up.

Please tell me how you picked that everything in NC was going encrypted by my statement? I do believe I said this is becoming the common thing across the country.

You would actually be surprised of the number of agencies that are talking encryption.
