I just purchased a Grundig G1000A. Now I know a bit more about the specs of other SW radios I feel I need more features, mainly more power. I can return the G1000A without issue. 'The Source' has the following radios, which would be the best for the (Canadian) dollar?

ETON S350 DELUXE AM/FM SHORTWAVE FIELD RADIO $99.99
ETON ELITE SERIES E10 AM/FM SHORTWAVE RADIO $149.99
GRUNDIG G4000A AM/FM/SHORTWAVE RADIO $149.99 after $20.00 savings

Out of the radios you posted, I would pick the Grundig. Only for the ssb option. I have owned a Grundig and they are a decent radio. But I can also say, I own a Kaito 1103 and it whoops the Grundig for features and for price. The Kaito is also about 60$ cheaper then the Grundig (going by US dollars here). I bought my Kaito for 89.99 in US dollars abd it is the best money I ever spent on a SW radio.

Just my opinion.

Hi there Metalfab. In a SW Receiver, what do you mean by more power? Louder audio out of the speaker? What?

And to cover all voice reception on SW (HF), you're definately going to want to have the sideband modes (ssb).

good luck

I should have been more detailed ;) More power meaning able to bring in and fine tune a signal instead of just a single analog dial. Preset stations too, I didn't even think about that feature until I started using the g1000a.

SSB would be nice but I'm more concerned with the SW range and signal, the g4000a and Eton E10 have 1.7 to 30MHz.

Here is a quote from a website about the E10, do these 2 features set it apart from the G4000A?
"The Etón E10 also provides two very special features. The first is called IF SET. This shifts the radio's Intermediate Frequency to minimize interference during shortwave reception. The second new feature is Antenna Trim. Rotating the antenna trimmer allows the efficient "matching" of the antenna to the radio."

Thanks in advance for the help

Thanks for the additional info.

The features you list on the Eton E10 look good but it doesn't look like it has the AM Broadcast Band on it. Why leave that out?

So I'd recommend one that goes from 530khz-30mhz and has ssb mode. With sideband you'll get all the ham voice transmissions as well as international aircraft and maritime shipping.

good luck

Thanks ReceiverBeaver for your help,

I went to the local shop and looked at all 3 units; the E100, E10 and G4000A. Prices are $99, $149, $149 respectfully. Almost immediately I didn't like the E100 after viewing all 3 of them 'live'. The Eton E10 does indeed have the AM band on it. The sales guy put batteries in the units and let me try them out. I dialed in the same 3 random SW stations on all of them, and checked for reception and clarity. The E10 and G4000A were very close, the E10 edged it out with the use of the IF SET. This shifts the radio's Intermediate Frequency to minimize interference during shortwave reception. After playing around a bit I went with the E10. I know it doesn't have SSB as I mention in my 2nd post SSB is not that important to me. I'll report back after using it more.

Its obviose but, the jump from the G1000A I returned was huge...why I didn't look at these in the first place is beyond me, you definately get what you pay for :)

Price rules in good receivers. The best cost more. They give you more, so it becomes "what is it worth to me?" Also, Eaton and Grundig are now one in the same. Made in China. In fact, I believe the Grundig name is no more.

I have a Grundig Yactboy a few years old as a bedside radio. It does okay. But, for getting the most out of SW, I'd suggest a used Icom, Kenwood or Yaesu receiver, to obtain the best of the world and have a solid rig to hook your computer to in order to get the digital transmissions via its sound card. Very simple and gets you teletype, PSK and many other more modern forms of commuinications.

Actually I'll throw another portable into the mix - The RadioIntel website says that there's a review of the new Eton E5 on the Passport to World Band Radio website. It would appear that the Yacht Boy and Sony 7600 now have even more competition. 73s Mike
