CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. -- A large fire and explosion at Chemical Coatings in Caldwell County has shut down NC Highway 321 and forced evacuations of homes and businesses in a two-mile radius of the facility.
North Carolina Department of Transportation officials said the area would be isolated while crews tend to the fire and chemicals at the plant until late Sunday afternoon.
Officials have not identified the chemicals as hazardous at this point.
Alan Toney, CCI's Market and Product Manager declined to comment in an email. "No comment at this time. Management will issue a statement when appropriate," he wrote.
Catawba County is dispatching six firetrucks and an ambulance. Wilkes and Alexander counties are also responding to the fire. Officials said the staging area for crews working the fire is at the Caldwell County Fair Grounds.
Police have closed Highway 321 from Pine Mountain Road south to Mission Road. Traffic is being directed to 321-A as an alternate route around the area.
Witness said they could see a large plume of smoke for miles.
