Turn on scanner
  1. Press Hold to stop scanning.
  2. Press and hold L/O until “Confirm Unlock All Channels?” appears in the display.
  3. Press Pgm/E to unlock all or .Clr to cancel.
The Butel software also has unlock under the Features heading.

When you buy a new BC125AT, there are NO frequencies programmed into the scanner, thus the scanner will show Scan Mode - Nothing to Scan when powered up. The scanner by default, locks all empty channels and empty banks, thus there is nothing to scan since there are no frequencies programmed into the scanner.

The first thing you have to do is program something into the scanner. For example, you might want to put an airplane frequency such as 119.100 in channel 1. Page 37 shows you how to do that. Then you might want to put a police frequency such as 155.500 in channel 2.

At that point BANK 1 will be unlocked and your scanner should scan channel 1 and channel 2.

Bank 1 holds channels 1 thru 50
Bank 2 holds channels 51 thru 100
Bank 3 holds channels 101 thru 150
....
Bank 10 holds channels 451 thru 500

Thus to put a frequency in Bank 2, you have to store the frequency in a channel between 51 and 100.

If you have some frequencies in Bank 1 and some frequencies in Bank 2, then you can turn either bank on or both on.

What you are seeing Scan Mode - Nothing to Scan is frustrating to most new user, so hang in there and just store a few frequencies in the scanner.

You will also get that message if you turn off all banks after you have programmed the scanner.

Couple tips...

1. If you think your grandson wants to listen to police and fire, plus maybe planes and trains, you might want to do the following

Put police frequencies in Bank 1
Put fire frequencies in Bank 2
Put airplane frequencies in Bank 3
Put train frequencies in Bank 4

2. Several folks have recommend software, I use Scan125. If you and/or your grandson plan to put 50 to 100 or more frequencies in the scanner, software will be real helpful. You won't loose what you have already programmed by hand because the software can read what is currently in the scanner, then you can move it to whatever bank and/or channel with the software and then store it back in the scanner.

One other thing you should tell us - where does your grandson live (state and county - not house address) - you are apparently located in same county as Charlotte, NC and all of the police, fire, Ems for the entire county appears to be on a digital P25 trunk system. The BC125AT can not receive digital signals nor can it handle a trunk system.

If your grandson lives in the same city and/or county as you do, he is probably limited to airplanes, trains, and a few other things like ham radio or maybe a nearby county or city that still uses analog FM radio systems.

unless it is keypad lock...

Press Func then L/O to toggle the keypad lock on and off. The scanner displays Keypad Lock On or Keypad Lock Off.
