To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I'm looking for a small compact cb radio to fit in my 2017 Jeep GC.

"cannot be tuned or peaked"

You really do not want to have any CB radio tuned or peaked. The majority of the folks doing this "service" do not know what they are doing or are disingenuous in suggesting that a brand new radio that was factory tuned electronically to meet published specifications needs to be tuned and peaked. Would you tune and peak your new HDTV? It is not a Ferrari or a Mustang, and those really don't need tuning or peaking those either unless you like wrecking stuff.

Your challenge will be in installing a radio antenna on your Jeep. While Jeeps beg for radios, they offer little in the way of a ground plane to make a CB radio play well. EDIT if a GC is Grand Cherokee, carry on and install a Larsen NMO27 antenna in the roof. Your little radio will thank you.

I have a Stryker 94hpc in my 2013 Jeep, small has a little more punch than a normal 11 meter radio. It does have FM but no SSB. Quadratec makes a mount for a CB for the Jeep I used. As others have mentioned, getting your antenna working correctly is the hard part. I have mine mounted on the tire carrier but the door is not grounded so I had to run a grounding strap from the door to the frame.

Nice pics of that Jeep install.

The SR65 mic is a nice upgrade.

But,

Got that QD (antenna quick disconnect) upside down.

I’d obtain a 5” riser (Wilson) or longer to get coil farther above roof atop an antenna stud. Re-test.

Rust/corrosion seen is a problem. Both sides of mount need to be shiny metal. Lightest layer of No-Alox or similar before install.

The Hustler QD is stainless, but the spring inside of it (?). One can’t get to it (Test with/without; maybe replace).

I’d wrap that set of junctions at antenna base with (1) of Rescue Tape and cover with (2) of Scotch 88. (Zip-tie ends down). Same at coax.

Woven braid RF Bond looks good. Needs bare metal underneath both ends.

More on RF Bonds

A top load antenna — Skipshooter 6’ (7’ preferred)— is likely a better performer in that location. (Shown above, with same QD; before three-layers of tape).

— Jeeps need all the help they can get, range is too limited. Rare that I can keep talking to a man much past a mile or so on the highway. TLC needed.

— Reports are that the JEEP windshield cowl is itself a better antenna location.

Cord/Cable management needed. As a truck driver I’ve learned the hard way.

Power is 5A draw @ 10’ so 12 or 14-AWG from BATT, and NEG to closest ground, right? (Fuse POS only).

With radio, the video points out good stuff:

Run an RF Bond from radio back or case screw to same location as NEG.

Can make from old coax shield.

Strongly recommend an extension speaker. Here’s how I mount a KENWOOD KES-5 to fire forward into drivers footwell in my pickup (can also maybe go completely under seat).

You’ll pick up (hear) more than before. Big change. It’s high efficiency. I can listen to NOAA from 40-yards with the Cummins idling away, door open and radio volume nowhere near all the way up.

Find used on eBay, or new. (Paid $12). Mil-spec wet resistance. It’s what’s used in fire, police, EMT, etc.

There’s more you can do with coax filters, ferrites, etc to improve SNR. (A new thread).

Oh, but I only use it on the trail. One mile is fine”. Yeah, but the highway miles to get there and back are more important in some regards.

that radio the Radioddity CS-47... looks fantastic... all controls are on the mic so you can just place it under the seat ...screw the mic clip to the seat and hang the mic on the dash or console... after you modify it ( just cut a wire move a jumper) it will put out 8 watts on AM and 15 on FM and it has the integrated NRC that makes it a really GREAT radio!

Thanks for all the info. I've had this set up for a bunch of years now. I have a question, how is the Hustler QD upside down, that's the only way it could go. I need it for garages where I get my cancer treatments.

Orientation. Need a stud as shown in post. The secondary fits atop stud, the primary (big piece) goes to antenna.

Push down and rotate to remove.

You’re missing the antenna stud it appears.

I'm not sure I understand and I've had it the way it is for years. I pick up skip really well and get clear radio checks local, but there's not a lot of activity where I am anymore. I guess I'll, take it apart when I get a decent day to do it, but I'm pretty sure I'm not missing anything. As it is now I push the antenna down and twist and lift, the antenna comes out and the entire Huster gizmo stays where it is. Are you saying the Hustler gizmo should come off too, attached to the antenna shaft?

thanks again.

Ok I found a couple photos that show it the opposite of mine, I will have to see if I can flip it somehow. Thanks for the heads up for sure.
Now that I think about it, I always wondered why they had the gripy part because I had to twist the antenna, not it, to disconnect. Oh well.

I am going to throw my hat into the ring.

I am a Cobra man, but my mind was changed after I bought an Anytone 500-M. This little boy walks and talks. This radio has is also FM.

I wasn't too impressed with the microphone. The up/down channel selector in the mike was annoying. So, I had someone switch the the plug to a four-pin Astatic power microphone.

There is a way to tweak this out with a sub-menu.

The following hyperlink shows it is out of stock, but it has an excellent description of the features and even has the instruction manual as it is in the box. I paid around $85 for it from a professional two-way radio store.

I got around to following slowmover's advice and changed things around, still have to find an open spot to tune the antenna better.

excellent! one of the few jeep installs that might actually work.... just amazing how people throw antenna's on a jeep with no grounding .... bad antenna placement and expect it to work.... hope it works great for you.... looking good so far!...... did you put wide RF bonding straps from the spare tire carrier to the tailgate and the tailgate to the body and frame???? I personally think it helped a great deal on my pick up install.

Yes, gate to body. Scroll back and see the before photos. I've had that set up for nearly the life of the Jeep, which is a 2013. It was pointed out the quick disconnect was upside down all that time, that's what the most recent photos are about.
