You guys have inspired me.... I ordered an RTL SDR a few weeks ago and it arrived this week. I have set it up to track aircraft around me - I haven't tried PlanePlotter yet, just using ADSB# and ADSB Scope to watch the coming and goings overhead. Very cool stuff....for a $20 investment.

not to steal the thread

Not that it is a new interesting plane, but one plane had to turn back into YYC because of a bird strike this evening. Landed safely with a problem with it's right engine. Was interesting watching it vector to come back and watch other in bound planes vectoring around as well to allow the emergency landing. Second one this weekend for emergency landing that I heard on the radio waves. Not sure if it showed up on any one's radar, but what looked like 2 F-18s landed at YYC on March 22 at around 1700 local. Couldn't see them at first but heard them coming in for landing on 34 and they were separated by a couple hundred meters. Sounded like they were at 150 decibels just coasting in to land.

I haven't been in town for a while, as you might have noticed - spent some time down in Florida, in the Tampa area. I saw some neat stuff on my mobile PP setup while there, but I was more into looking at baseball games and the occasional experimentation on the P25 systems in the area.

The only Canforce milair thing my home PP unit picked up was a new (to me) C130 flying as CFC2542, tail 130612.

I finally broke down and tried this. Using adsb# adsbscope and VirtualRadar.
Wow, very cool! I may need to get another USB stick to dedicate to this.

Anyone know of anybody sharing received data locally?

There's at least four of us on PlanePlotter's network right now. I'm B3; there's a fellow in the SW who has been posting recently on the PP Yahoo group. I'm sending this from my phone so I don't have the details but I'll get them when I get home.

Getting on to PP would be a plus since you could help with Mlat - providing location fixes for acft not sending position data.

planeplotter : PlanePlotter

If you look through the message archives (you have to join the group), you'll see a fellow named Brian who is sharer D4. There are also DM and zM in the local Calgary area but neither Brian nor I have heard from them, as far as I know.

I must be missing something obvious. Between the free Virtualradar, the free ADSBscope and the paid Planeplotter, the hideous 1987 user interface and horrible map handling of Planeplotter makes me want to scream. Not sure why I'd pay for it. What am I missing?

Planeplotter requires a little bit of thought and effort to set up and tailor to your needs ...but if you are happy with a web based tracker , then stick with those.

Of course you'll be missing out on a great deal of info , especially now that the multilateration sectors are
developing across the USA.
About 80 % of a/c across America dont actually track. Those plots you see on the web trackers from the FAA are historic and not necessarilly accurate.......where as the data you'll get from Planeplotter will be live.

As for the maps....well its a rather simple matter of either pressing the "map" button , or creating your own ATC style mapping using any of the free map sets available.

In the last 24 hours , Planeplotter Mlat created 171,000 mlat fixes...these are fixes you won't see on any other system....many of those were across the USA.

Planeplotter is for the discerning aviation enthusiast , but if you are just a casual observer...stay with the web trackers.

I check out the Calgary area every few days to see if I can activate an Mlat sector for you.....its soooooo close to becoming a useable network....just a couple more ground stations should do it.

BTW if you are trying manual mlats , then in options sharing set up , tick the "Ignore 5km rule " box , that might increase the chances of a fix as a couple of GS are quite close to each other

.

Thanks for the input! I'll give it a closer look.

I wasn't aware of mlat and how it works. Makes sense now.
