The KAP-2 has landed! OK I apologize, the KAP-2 does not work the way I was thinking. I have done headsets on the TK-X90 series with the KAP-1 and had no problem. The TK-8180 only provides for public address function through the KAP-2 which precludes transmitting out on the selected channel (but screaming in the mic and having it come out the speaker, what fun). Bummer. But all is not lost. You can make this work. You'll have to jumper together pins 4,5, and 6 on CN-1 of the KAP-2. The plastic jumper they provide won't do it as it only does two pins. You'll have to wrap a piece of solid wire (phone or cat-5 cable) around all three and solder them to connect them. You can now connect the headset speakers to pins 4 and 5 of the 6 pin connector coming out the back of the radio. This will work fine. Sorry about that but I thought you could use a button on the control head to switch between the speaker and helmet, but that is not the case with this model. Your speaker and helmet will be active at the same time with this set up.

My fav thing in college was making Tesla coils and generating gigawatts of power. So adding a daughter board was within my skill set. Well that’s the theory anyways.

Time to figure out the db25 to 5-pin din pinout. (To match 8180 programming and comm set)

He gave you an incorrect pin number. Pin 4 is output only. You can't convert to an input. You need to select an input pin number, I use 13 or 21 for OTT, and correct your cable. You will want External PTT (Voice)

The other pins are static functions (they are physically wired to their functions)

It happens when someone spits out of their mouth without double checking.

I guess I need help knowing what to map each signal from the DB25 to the DIN5 specifically so I can both finish the connection diagram and the 8180 db25 pin to function programming

There is only one function to map in the programming&#8212;PTT. Everything else is using pins that are permanently &#8220;mapped&#8221;.

Pin 6 is always MI2 (rear mic)
Pin 25 is the Kenwood mic ground
Pin 11 or pin 18 is ground
Pin 17 is low level audio unaffected by volume control. Not enough to drive a headset unless it has a built in amplifier
To drive speakers you&#8217;ll need to use the KAP-2 output and wire the left and right headset input together and tie them back to the KAP-2 speaker return.

You can't change these settings, the pins aren't going to show up in the software as they are physically wired to their respective functions and are not software programmable.

The only programmable pins are the input/output logic pins. An input is something that tells the radio what to do, an output is the radio telling something what to do.

The accessory port is low level audio that is constant level regardless of volume setting meant to feed a device such as a logging recorder, computer, modem, etc--an ACTIVE device. It doesn't have the drive for a PASSIVE device--speaker, headset, etc. (By the way, those things inside the headset that provide audio are called speakers!) You need to use the 1/4" external speaker jack or the KAP-2 speaker output to drive any passive audio accessory.

3. PTT switch

The DB25 can handle your Mic input and PTT. However you decide to wire them is up to you. PTT just is a momentary contact close across the PTT input and ground. Just two wires for PTT. Same with mic, mic in and mic ground.

I suggest getting a copy of the TK-8180 Service Manual, it'll really help.
