Check out the Tecnet (formerly Maxon) TPD-1000 series radios.

They should start shipping in 3-4 weeks for around $329 if I remember correctly…uses the same cable as most XPR series radios.

I saw no less than 15 Chinese DMR Tier II vendors at IWCE this week.

I got a couple of brochures but nothing big. I just bought an xpr6550 this morning and am patiently awaiting my demo radio from Tecnet to arrive.

I just e-mailed Ed, the owner at Wouxun US, the importer of the new AT-D858 DMR radio. He replied that it's made by another mfr, not Covalue. But since the same company in China writes the software for all the companies, that's why it's possible to transfer codeplugs from one brand of DMR radio, to another.

Best part was how many of the Chinese DMR radios at IWCE this year finally had front panel programming. Easy to program a new channel with TX and RX frequency, slot, color code, and group, all right from the keypad. And several of them "claimed" they would be in the US market within a few months at $108, $114, etc. retail. We shall see.

Still, I didn't come across one that would allow open monitoring/decoding of DMR traffic on an active frequency without knowing the color code and group (ala DSD+). Nor did I come across a dual band DMR handheld. Several of them took careful notes as I explained those requests, however.

Hate to be that guy but I would not hold my breath. Many of the promises of the $100 DMR radio with FPP have yet to materialize on the open market.

For that matter, the CS7000 hasn't materialized either, and probably won't.

My guess is because there is no one to copy from. I am not being funny, but we see plenty of WOC analog radios that are basically knock offs of each other. All of them are the same RDA1845/1846 based WOC with a different piece o' plastic wrapped around it.

Still, I didn't come across one that would allow open monitoring/decoding of DMR traffic on an active frequency without knowing the color code and group (ala DSD+).

and as DMR by nature and design to be a closed system, you probably won't see a "digital carrier squelch" or "open monitor function" on a DMR radio from anyone. Don't throw out your DSD/SDR Sharp/DMRDecode and SDR dongles yet.

Nor did I come across a dual band DMR handheld.

I wouldn't hold my breath for that either. It's nice to dream though.

I'd count on Motorola Solutions releasing a DMR Flashport upgrade path for their APX7K/8K line before the ChiCommers would put out a dual band DMR.

That would be something to really be excited about.

Attached are a few examples of the Chinese FPP DMR radios that were at IWCE 2015.

I didn't even bother asking Simoco about if their system can be programmed FPP…I was too busy trying to sell a DFW based company on a multi-site, wide-area Tier III system. Didn't bother asking Tecnet either.

Tecnet also was showing some fresh out of the mold $200 range DMR (one is digital only) hand helds…not as nice as the TDR-1000…that they are hoping to get shipped in the next 6 months.

And here is the Tecnet offering.

An $8,000 DMR radio? No, I wouldn't be very excited about that at all.

MTS2000des, it takes a while to do a quality radio; people are saying the same thing about the Northwest Digital Radio UDRx-440 (aka UDR-56k) and it's been in development longer.

I've heard rumors from the right people at Kenwood that there will be a version of the NX-5000 coming out in the next year or so that will do analog, P25, NXDN and DMR. After all, it's just software on the "already there" vocoder.

Now all they have to do is make one that is dual band/multi band and they will have some serious competition to the APX lineup and the EFJ VP900.

I was looking at a couple of the mobile units like the CDM-550H and even the Hytera PD-368. I am sure there is no issue with programming the Hytera, but what about the CDM-550H? I would really hate to get a radio like this and not have decent CPS and more importantly having to spend hours upon hours to dump in all of my codeplug that I am using currently on my CS700 and 6550... Has anyone programmed any of these Chinese radios?
