I purchased my SDS 100 back in December 2018 and this past year my unit has become virtually deaf to RF. My unit often can’t even lock onto a control channel and shows around -97 RSSI and zero bars when my BCD436, BCD396 (all 3 portables on stock rubber duck) and BCD996 have full bars. Virtually deaf to the entire spectrum, regardless of what kind of antenna I am using, any distance from a simulcast site.

I’ve tried every filter. The only thing I can get to work (and this is still not consistent) is to turn my squelch down to 0 and filter off. However, this leaves the reception not reliable.

One other thing to note, when I don’t have any scan lists selected, there is a crackling noise on the radio when it says nothing to scan…I’ve been told by others here these all may be signs of cold solder on these units?

What is the term of warranty repair for these types of issues? This is an issue that has progressively become worse with time. The unit receives noticeably worse than it did before when it was first purchased.

Ridiculous to have to pay $100 to send a $700 radio that’s less than 5 years old I’m for a repair for a known manufacture defect..

You should contact Uniden support using the info on this page and see what they can do...

I did, sent them basically the same thing as what I posted originally.

This was the response:
“ Good Afternoon,

Our warranty policy covers only a single year after purchase.

For any issues outside of that warranty, you would have to pay for the repairs. You can find all of the information to send a unit in on our website repair.uniden.com

Uniden Support”

Also, I’ve been seeing some “horror stories” about Uniden’s repair not properly fixing this issue along with several others. Anyone know of another reputable repair source, possibly even local to DFW?

So fix it yourself. Good luck with that.

I didn't realize it's such a big deal to expect at least decent customer and product support for a $700 product that is only less than 5 years old and has been kept in pretty good condition. Sure, they had their cold solder campaign a few years back...but how was I supposed to know my unit would end up suffering from it until it it started having issues now? So yeah, kinda ridiculous to make me pay $100 to fix something that is a known manufacturer defect. I get having to pay to fix damage caused by the customer, I have no issue with that. I'm not even asking Uniden to give me a completely new unit, just asking them to fix the defect that my radio was unknowingly purchased (brand new) with....and a repair that likely wouldn't even cost anywhere near that to complete.

As others have mentioned previously on this forum, if there was another scanner company making units that were comparable to this one in terms of performance with LSM, Uniden customers most likely would not be being taken for a ride like this. Kind of a rip off.

If you were within a year, it was a free repair per the warranty. Other than that, you had to pay the repair cost. That's the warranty policy.

I agree, too. It was free during the warranty period. I can't quantify how bad/prevalent the CSJ issue was, but it wasn't like every single unit produced in 2018 was defective. If that was the case, then I think it would be very reasonable for Uniden to have a repair campaign.

The OP got about close to 4 [full] years of use from their SDS100, and while it sucks the CSJ issue didn't show up right away for the warranty period, it was working as expected past the warranty period until now.

I might not be thinking/searching far enough. Only thing I remember about any particular campaigns were:
  • BCDx36HP Real Time Clock Issue
  • SDS200 Hum Mitigation Part
  • SDS100 Extended Battery [Those who got the small battery before the change in the box?]

There was also a service campaign on the early production 536HPs. The assembly plant substituted an unsuitable component that caused a hum in the audio. I had one of the early production units & sent it in for the fix. This involved a small number of initial production units. A different issue than the later 'humming SDS200's".

Went ahead and just shipped my unit off yesterday. Hopefully it’s a fast turn around.

Since you (and I, among others) are in the DFW area, even ground shipping is essentially next day delivery (if you don't miss the pickup cutoff time). Cross your fingers for a quick turn-around.

Just got word they received it yesterday. However, estimated return time is 11/28.

I’m guessing supply chain shortage is still an issue for them.
