To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Probably because of this... And I'll use the cobra 29 as an example. The new ones are garbage. The old ones were built better, are highly modifiable, and used better parts. Just my 2 cents.

This does not include some of the new 10 meter radios that can be converted to 11 meter. Most of those are decent.

Can someone explain why these used CB's are going for a price that for $20 more you can get it new with factory warranty?

Just as bad on the eBay auctions. More money than brains.

It's not just CB's.

I've sold old amateur radio equipment on the ebays in the past.
Yaesu VX-170, bought it new for about $140. Sold for $175.
Yaesu FT-7800, bought for about $190. Sold for $225.
E-Bay, I think people get competitive and will want to win at any cost. Usually the bids shoot up quickly and I'm always amazed what people will pay for my old junk.

I've sold 2 dirt bikes on Facebook market place. Since the prices are all over the place, and there is always someone out there that wants it no matter what. I usually start the price high and see how it goes, then lower it a bit week by week until someone buys it. I've never been disappointed.

funny I can't figure people out either????
60% of the stuff on E-bay is JUNK and as you said it sells for close to what a new one would???
today I was going to buy another Midland 75-822 ( I need it like I need a hole in my head) ... the shipping was $10.00.... it was bid at $35.00 ... it was a little beat up and scratched.... but they sell the Midland 75-822 BRAND NEW on Amazon for $92.00 and free shipping if you have prime.....
so I thought if I could bid $45.00 bucks and pay the $10.00 for shipping I'd get it for $55.00 bucks good deal..... and that handheld does a lot and is really a nice model..... so I watched it sell for $66.00 plus $10 for shipping so they actually paid $76.00 for a used beat up radio to save $16.00??????
maybe it's worth more because they owned it????
I honestly have a trash can full of handheld CB radios I've gotten off E-bay that don't work! maybe 45 to 50.....

I used to....if it was cheap, buy a lot of different handhelds off e-bay..... like if it was $15.00 bucks and looked good I'd take a chance... after getting burned about 10 times I will not buy a radio unless it say's radio tested and works!...... so I have 30 to 40 radio's that don't work.... I get the radio and find it doesn't work.... I e-mail the seller and say HEY you said it was tested and works.... well it doesn't ( insert problem ) transmit or receive???? they then write me back they only had one CB and had no way to test it.... but when they put power to it, a light came on???? so they refund my money and tell me to throw it away... they never want to pay to have me ship a broken radio back to them???....... so I'm pretty much done buying on E-bay..... but I did sell a old Cobra 148 GTL that was never used for $620.00???? and I will be selling my old President Grant Export soon and I am sure it will get over $500.00..... E-bay is now great for selling ...terrible for buying.

Yeah.

"Unable to test" = broken.
"Tested/good" = powered on, no more.

Whenever I sold radios, I always showed a photo of it hooked up to my Bird 43 and a dummy load showing it actually was transmitting.
But I'd always make sure they were listed as "as is, no returns", since there's a lot of people out there that don't know what they are buying, and will blame that on me.

The VX-170 I sold I made sure I listed it as "unmodified" and clearly stated it transmitted 144-148MHz. Sure enough, the guy who bought it was volunteer fireman and was upset because it wouldn't work on his fire department frequencies.

So, a lot of bad sellers and a LOT of bad buyers. I never spend money on e-Bay that I cannot afford to lose.

Thought I would buy a scanner and found a Bearcat BCT-15X for about third the nominal price.
Seller noted it was dead, won't power on. Not much problem for me being a long time bench tech, so jumped on it.
Testing, I found the current draw met specs, power off to power on, well, power switching works but still DOA.
Some research, seems there is a 20 volt boost converter with a history of failure. Bought this tiny boost converter also on feebay.
Set for 20 volts, installed it in replacing the original. Now it functions like new and excedes all the specks. Sitting here right now, been running 4 years. Also did the discriminator tap mod. $200.00 if anybody wants it.
Years back, bought a General MC-11a with D104 mic, no TX for $25.00 at a swap meet(Wanted the mic). Replaced a burned screen resistor and worked like new. IF you find one today, working at all, over $250.00 and the mic like $75.00 an up.
Base antennas, JEEZ, a decent beam can run over $600.00, I bought a 5 element for $50.00. For mobile,
Bought a Hustler fold over mast, ball/spring mount and full complement of RMxx 1Kw coils( 80-10 + 11M) all under $100.00, priced out today will be about $400.00

And people wonder why CB is dying.

Just wondering..

Aggravating to say the least
People think their old junk is priceless or gold plated, but then a McDonals hamberger for $13, I guess is the sign of the times.

If you have the skill & time to fix it buy it on ebay..if not save your money and buy new or buy used through RR, Eham or QTH. I realize these resources don’t have many CBs but there is probably a reason for that.

Back in the day when I was in the CB Radio scene you could get a Cobra 29ltd classic for a really good price ($100 to $150) all depends on whats been inside the radio but thats a different topic). For the export radios like the Galaxy 88's and 99V's especially the popular back the Magnum S3, S6 and the Magnum S9 mobile radio was really up there in price range for the CB radio hobbyist it had great audio/modulation when in use.

Now for the newer radios such as the Stryker brand radio like the Stryker 655 and 955 these radios go for really good money to the interested person who is wanting a new radio. I had the Stryker 955 it was a good radio on AM and side band.

I guess the cost of CB Radios of all kinds all depends on the seller, the buyer and the market cost of what radios are selling for such on CB radio forums, Facebook Market place and Craigslist and other social media platforms.

As a brand-new AM/FM w/NRC ANYTONE 500 is $110, and a WILSON 1000 mag-mount antenna is $100, adding a DRX-901 Speaker at $60 plus miscellaneous to include 12V power at $55 gives performance older radios can’t match.

$325

That’s $200 in 2004.

String a DIY antenna at home and add a cheap power supply. $35?

$360 is under a dollar per day.
And it’ll last many years.

Someday go back and add a KL-203. $80.

Done.

Has anyone compared RX spec on this radio versus higher-priced, more feature-laden radios? I’d bet it’s not far off.

SSB is another critter. A few days ago V.1 “Long Case” AT-5555-N2 was selling on Ali Express at $167. That’s the bargain of the past half-century as retail just prior to V.2 “Short Case” was $270.

Which by itself replaced $600 in pre-NRC gear to achieve the same performance.

Value for the money spent . . not the nickels and dimes that got you there.

IMG_5052.jpeg

The QT-40 I find less desirable, but it’s basically the same V.1 radio still at $199.99.

No point at all in buying used, obsolete radio gear. (The tech-repair savvy who want a back-up radio to talk down the street?)

Double the price of the QT-40 for state-of-art in Citizen Band for a start in what would’ve been $1,000 and higher ten years ago given one follows thru in what’s needed (RF or Station Bonds, CMC Choke, etc) to achieve entry to high performance.

There’s no market for hubcaps any more. Except as decoration on garage walls.

Can’t buy ‘em cheap and stack ‘em deep?

The QT40 is now on sale from radioddity for $159.99 w/free mag mount, free HF/VHF/UHF ebook, and free shipping. New customers also receive a $10 discount putting it at $149.99.

I don't see why it's less desirable. It's a great radio with all the features of the 5555/6666/qt60, just at a slightly lower output power.

The RX on the AT500M/CB500 is on par with its big brothers. Actually it may be a hair better. Hard to say, but darn close.

Wow!

QT40.

I find it less desirable (why I’ve rarely mentioned it), not that the spec is undesirable. The tiny meter is useless while mobile and it’s not simpler to use than QT60. Others will have their own preferences.

Helluva deal.

NRC outweighs other factors.
And close-out models rule the bargain roost.

The prices are somewhat inconsistent and the seller may or may not have any idea what they’re selling or whether it even works. I’ve had some decent luck on eBay and even marketplace. I just figure there’s a good chance it won’t work when I receive it. I had some good luck at a yard sale about 2 weeks ago. I got a working Cobra 29 Ltd Classic and a working 3 amp Radio Shack power supply for $20. The CB didn’t have a power cord but I have a number of them that will fit.

If it’s an item I really want to work, I’d buy a new one. If it’s something I’d like to have and accept I may have to fix it first, then I’ll roll the dice.
