• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I bought a couple of UV-82HP radios and I was wondering what type of range I can expect in simplex. These would be used mostly in a relatively flat wooded area with very few buildings. What were your experiences?

That all depends on terrain and weather. You should get 5 miles and up to 15 if you are totally unobstructed, its line of sight. So basically its not simple math,it has a few factors. For best results get a Nagoya or Diamond high gain antenna like a RH-77CA.I have a uv-82 and its not the HP and I can get from my ht to a base from NJ to NYC,which is ten miles away.

Will depend on your power setting as well. Motorola puts it something like this, for their FRS/GPRS radios:
35 miles, mountaintop to valley. Five miles, open water. Three miles, light woods. One mile or less, "neighborhoods", i.e. typical 1-2 story woodframe homes.
Note that UHF is basically line of sight, which puts limits on the range. Line of sight for two radios, six feet above ground, is about three miles even at sea or in the desert. Line of sight between two mountaintops can be 128 miles.
So your range will vary with the power setting, and what stuff is blocking the signal. Your body (a big sack of water) also blocks radio signals pretty well, if it comes between your radio and the "other" one.

That's like asking, "How high is up?" Too many variables to give an accurate answer.

I was asking for your experiences. Of course there are many factors. Im not looking for a specific distance. But like the GMRS radios I own, Ive routinely gotten out to a mile and yes in perfect conditions, ive done futher. But thats not the norm. So that wouldnt be the answer id expect.

If you hook it up to something like an Ed Fong Jpole and hoist it up into a tree, your results could be surprisingly good! Same goes for a base set up. I hooked a UV5R to my 2m/440 roof antenna, and was able to hit repeaters 30+ miles out!

I've not done any simplex work with mine so far, but from inside my house, using my UV-82HP, I can routinely work a repeater approximately 20 miles away, using the stock antenna, and I can hear another repeater that is about 35 miles away. I also have a Nagoya 771 antenna for it, but I see no improvement over the stock antenna.

Depends. Simplex is much different than repeaters [height, receiving antenna of repeater, etc.]. Simplex anywhere from a couple of blocks to a mile or two as a general rule. You specifically mentioned wooded areas, so don't expect much more than maybe 5 miles with good antennas.
