Good day guys,
I'm programming VSTARS into my 96/2096. What do I need to enter for the Base Freq, Offset and Spacing? The tables and the custom table setup for 96/2096 lists several different sets of base freqs/offsets/spacing. Are these for different areas? Thanks a million in advance.

Welcome to the forum.

You will need Win96 software to set the three required Extended trunking tables in the scanner. The image on the right at the bottom of this RR Wiki link is the correct multi table for the system. All three are required.

Those in the database with step 6.25 are not used. In fact, any numbers in identifier# 03, 04 and 05 are ignored, so you can leave the default numbers as is.

Thanks for the help sir. I'm using Win96 software and it is awesome. The extended trunking tables are one feature I haven't gotten into yet. I purchased the Win96 software almost nine months ago, so I hope it's a version with access to those tables. Also, once everything is entered correctly, how does the pro96/2096 handle the digital vhf VSTARS system? Does it decode everything pretty well? I also have the vhf channels entered in conventional mode in a separate bank since I figure the VSTARS may still be transitioning to the trunked vhf. Do you use a similar setup?

Thanks again

Win96 V01.53 will be on the blue bar at the top when software is open. This version was developed on 4/13/06 specifically for VA STARS to provide for the 2.50kHz step size required.

As to how the scanner works with STARS...not as well as it should, but it appears the system uses multipackets (sending MDT data) at the same time as voice traffic. Thus, we miss a lot of voice traffic. The main dispatch talkgroups seem to be more affected by this, i.e. those simulcasted with the legacy conventional frequencies. This phenomena doesn't appear to be as bad with Division 1 towers as it is here in Division 5. Hopefully the solution will be fixed by the techs and Motorola (contractor) as the users have frequent complaints with dropped coms also.

Many of us use a program called PRO96COM to decode the data stream on a nearby CC. This software will provide considerable info on a P25 system but on STARS, much of it is missing. I.e., no (or at best) rare channel grants occur. Generally, a channel grant should occur on each radio voice transmission. The program is free and can be found in the files section of the Yahoo group (you will need to join) in the above link. The info listed on the RR Database link for STARS has a section near the top labeled Frequency Table with # 1-7. This data was collected from the Towers.txt file saved while running this program.

BTW, the two latest Uniden scanners apparently suffer the same problem with STARS.

Anyway, set the three tables by clicking on the Multi table bullet under MOT 9600 CC which ungrays the Extended Tables button. Then fill the upper three lines as in the Wiki graphic as indicated.

Uniden firmware upgrade fixed the problem

No, the 396/996T don't have that problem anymore. The Uniden 396/996T firmware upgrade broadcast in January 2007 contained a fix for multi-packet data stream partial/complete missed comms problems. Too bad GRE never did the same for the Pro 96 and 2096 users.

Thanks a million Frank. You just answered my next question which was how to access the extended tables. I've field-tested my pro96 & 2096 on uhf trunked digital systems and it performs quite well. Hope to try v-stars vhf in the future.

Thanks again

Pro96/2096 Question To Fmon/frank

Hey Frank,
I entered the settings into the tables with no problem. One other question-does the vhf box under 9600 cc in the extended trunking table need to be toggled on? From the example in the RR Wiki-it appears it doesn't.

Thanks again for your help

No, do not select.

If you did select vhf, you can't "unselect". The remedy is to open a new template and copy/paste the freqs and tg's from the original file, then open the Extended Tables button and set again. Then save the new file as the original.

Thanks again sir. Can't wait to see how this system sounds. I'm been really pleased so far with the radio's digtal performance.

Good day and thanks
