WBCQ comes in fairly strong here on 9330 kHz during the evening, but with lots of fading, which makes it difficult to follow what's being said. It didn't help a few days ago when they were having a heated argument and everyone was talking at the same time. I'm still not sure what the subject was, because the discussion sounded pretty disjointed.

I can't hear them at all on 7490.

I'll have to check that out. I still have my Radio Shack DX 398, and it works very well. Just haven't used it for shortwave lately. I like that kind of music too.

It's been a HUUUge signal down here in our evenings, say 0900UTC. My schedule says the frequency was originally allocated to Brother Stair or the Overcomer Ministry at this time, 0200UTC which is right in the middle of a bright sunny winter's afternoon and all I can hear is a couple of guys and one lady talking about the 1930's - gee they must be old.... :)

Maybe it's my newly re-arranged antenna - AIR is giving me a good clear S9+ signal on 15030kHz with a nice quiet background.

Allan Weiner stated in an interview that the ERP of the new array as 20 MegaWatts. If you don't know of Allan Weiner's radio biography, look it up ... it is quite interesting.

No, just the two pics. I was showing the S-meter at +30 after 20dB of RF ATT.

That's all.

That is a beautiful Kenwood:cool: I always liked KWs but never had one.
Sorry about the question it's just that Dawn Adams mentioned a like for "that kind of music" in post #25 and I thought I was missing something:oops:

Nice R-1000, Mbott. That was my dream rig for a while. Wish I'd have gotten one... But my FRG-7 is similar vintage and still works well.

I'm late to the party, but thank you for the initial frequency post, the output power and the photograph. It is booming into California at S9+ at 0847 UTC. That signal is booming whether using the Off Center Fed antenna friendly to that frequency, or a vertical that is very much unfriendly at that frequency.

Thanks, it was an ebay find from a very reputable seller. Couple of years back I'd hoped to find one at the Dayton Hamfest but there was none to be found. Ended up with a R-5000 and then came across this R-1000. Both see daily duty.

....but the shortwave news says......

WBCQ’s new shortwave radio station, now under construction in Monticello, Maine, features a new 500-kilowatt transmitter from Continental Electronics and a state-of-the-art antenna system from Ampegon Antenna of Switzerland.

That must be some form of very efficient antenna or it has an incredibly narrow beam pattern.

ERP = Effective Radiated Power.... In short, the new antenna has GAIN over a dipole. So the ERP is 20 Megawatts.

Sorry, but you can't make anything from nothing. If the applied power is 500kW then you can't make 20MW without restricting the beamwidth whether it be horizontally or vertically. If you want to cover a vast area of the earth you have to point your antenna up a bit to get the reflections from the ionosphere - if you you to target a specific area then you have to narrow the beam - there's no magic involved. By the looks of their antenna it appears to be like the Russian OTHR with many dipoles against a reflector background - you can't call that 'non-directional.
