• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

You'll get all kinds of recommendations and they'll probably be good ones but you also need to use Google to see what's available. That way, you can see the features, the prices and other pertinent information. I'd also check Amazon whether you buy from them or not. Amazon will show a lot of the features and their price. If you see something you like, look for the same unit elsewhere and compare prices, return policies, etc.

I don't do CB so I have no specific recommendations. It's probably been at least 3 years since I've seen my CB, let alone used it.

For the money one won’t find better than the PRESIDENT McKinley. IOW, don’t go below this. See other posts threads to that end.

Today, though, I’d search out an ANYTONE AT-5555N v2 due to onboard DSP (NRC-circuit). See info and links in Stryker 955 thread. The CRT-7900 as also referenced.

And, avoid the little Wil. You want a SIRIO 5000 or Wilson 5000

Think I'll go with the McKinley . Only issue I have with the mount of the Wilson 5000 on my cab roof is my portable car port the whip will eventually rip a hole in the tarp . Idk where else to put a mag mount ?

Been eye balling the galaxy 959 .

My three main radios the past five years:

Galaxy DX series AM/SSB mobile

86V

99 V2

959B

Wouldn’t wish to trade them. That last one I bought only a year ago and it became my all-time favorite.

But I’m on AM-19 95% of the time, and run it with an amp. And must run it with outboard DSP to get the most from it. Bells CB now has it at $300. The W-M DSP speaker is another $200. Shipping, tax & misc you’re now at $600 for what you can get for $325-$475 from an Anytone/CRT or Stryker 955 V2 plus a Kenwood KES-5.

The Galaxy radios have RX capabilities which make it easy for me to distinguish between who’s near and who’s far in traffic. I must at times make rapid decisions based on unconfirmed reports. The ear is listening for veracity.

My President Lincoln II+ is a decidedly better radio in every respect save TX audio “quality”. But everyone sounds the same. Not good for my use at work. Lacks NRC so far, thus the Any/CRT or Stryker recommendations.

It is (would be) very hard to top a 955 Stryker, for any aspect of mobile. The newest version (since May, confirm before purchase) even more so.

Version II of Stryker 955 AM/SSB

I paid $500 for a virtually unused YAESU ft450d a couple of years ago. Has an optional bracket to run as a mobile. MARS MOD to run 11-Meter.

True, the cheat sheet to run it is longer than the owners manual for the radios above, but most of it is set & forget (be careful, not casual).

Language lacks the descriptive terms to quickly summarize the superiority of this unit (this type of entry-level Amateur) over the ones above.

I made a base station/mobile radio rig gift to my son last year of a McKinley plus a KL-203 mounted in a Tac Comm TRC-1. And a SIRIO 5000 fold-over. Included an ALINCO 30A power supply and a RADIOWAVZ Bazooka antenna. Coax, plus miscellaneous.

Did his vehicle install about a year ago. Quick removal. Direct-to-battery. Just needs
either a new radio with NRC as above or a DSP speaker to make it current.

WEST MOUNTAIN RADIO CLEARSPEECH DSP SPEAKER is required to run with the big dogs if radio not changed. $200.

I've tried a few Galaxy CB's in recent years and I think they're total junk for the most part. They had their hay-day but those days are gone.

I have the Uniden 998 and the Lincoln2+. The Uniden is decent if you get a ranger 198 Mic.. The Lincoln is the way to go if you want to get out. It will require a resitor mod for the 11 band, but you can listen to 10 and 12 meters until you get your ticket.

I pulled the plug and got the Lincoln ordered . Next is the mag mount antenna . was told the Stryker would perform better than the Wilson 5k . So I'll just wait till the Lincoln comes in and read reviews on the Stryker .
