How are you receiving GPS signal on ft400 when it is in the rack?

Hi Mark,

There are 3 ways to solve the problem, first is to use an external GPS like this Garmin GPS-18. This is the solution I use in the Tahoe. I soldered my own mini stereo plug in place (page 84 in the owner's manual) and tied the power to my 5 volt converter in the console, then set the FTM-400 to EXTERNAL GPS.

Another choice that did not work for me was the GPS repeater. This thing played HAVOC with the multiple other GPS units in the Tahoe so it was quickly scrapped, on the other hand if you are inside a building it should work well.

My solution to this particular problem is to just enter my location manually and turn the GPS off.

That would be the Yaesu FTM-400DR/DE Operating Manual, the APRS addendum touches on external GPS but does not give any details on how to actually construct one. The literature that comes with the Garmin GPS-18 only gives you the pinout of the connectors / wires (depending on which version you purchase).

That's why I like this radio Yaesu gives you so many avenues that you can expand and explore.

Been a little under the weather the last few days but I finally got something done on the Fusion project.

I'm not real proud of the cutout work of the base panel and I will revisit that once I am fully reunited with my tools and workshop, I also have a lot more aluminum stock there to choose from.

I think the next phase is to build an end-fed longwire for HF. My current living situation won't allow a large antenna array and I think I'm pushing my luck with what's already up. Plus there is no avoiding the fact that it will eventually have to come down and be moved so an end-fed is a good compromise.

Thanks for the kind words Fred, always appreciated. My friends call me Keith or Munchkin (not a CB handle but a military nickname that stuck) so please feel free. Most folks that call me Ron knew me in high school or Air Force, or they cross reference my callsign. Since I can't get the FCC to put up Munchkin Fronk I guess we just have to figure it out from here.

On a brighter note I'm working on a multiple bank of scanners to enjoy the air show this weekend so stay tuned for that.

Been watching severe weather across Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas today and decided to try and resurrect an old computer to use for the weather station and maybe even decoding some WeFax with the Kenwood R-5000 and the M-7000 decoder. Yes it's ancient gear but the Kenwood R-5000 will outperform most commercial and military receivers that I have used.

Now when Windows decides to get done updating I'll unplug everything and tuck the wires in. I have drawers for the keyboards but that will take some drill press work for the rails.
