• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

    Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

    If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

    To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

    The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

So I finally got the right cable and have started to program everything I want on it but when it comes to type II I'm not really sure what I'm doing. I'm mainly concerned about it affiliating to the smartnet system and my radio being bricked. Is there a way to non affiliate scan a type II smartnet system or will it always affiliate? I'm mainly confused since under the "Type II" submenu in the "trunking system" menu of the programming tree, it says "Affiliation type", I've attached an image below.

Ditch the XTS5K and get an MTS2000. So easy to NAS with them. All you do is program like normal with system key. Then set affiliation to PTT then set the top secure switch to TX disable.
I was actually looking at those before I bought the 5000. Should’ve done more research lol.

MTS2000s. They're perfect for old 3600 smartnet systems as instruction above stated. The 900's you gotta look for the model number. You'll need to find a "W" in the beginning instead of "U"
W=900
U=800
So H01Wxxxxx would be a 900 model

Forgot to add, you'll need one with the trunking package in the flashcode

At least in my experience every 900 MTS2000 I've acquired seem to have minimum basic flashcode of 000004-000000-6 H37 smartnet

Just another question about the XTS, I saw somewhere on here that it can scan talkgroups listed with T? Trying to see if I can get at least something out of the 5K before I decide to get rid of it. For reference, I live in Galveston County and most of everything down here is on TxWarn which is a phase II system so I l’m gonna assume I can’t use it for anything in my county.

Here and there
XTS will only do phase 1. The only time it'll go back to phase 1 from 2 is a radio affiliates on that talk group in phase 1 if the subscribers and system is designed to do so.

You can definitely get XTS 2500s in 900, I got one recently really cheap for ham use. I'm guessing they are easier to program than MTS stuff, but I've never used anything older than XTS/XTL myself.

the only ways you should scan a trunked system is either entering the voice channels as conventional channels and scanning them, or buying a scanner. Then you wont have to worry about affiliation at all, or risk having your radio and computer confiscated.

Correct me if I' wrong, is Astro25 firmware hardcoded to affiliate, only available as Automatic, whereas the the MTS/MCS the option to PTT on affiliate is available for old type 2 systems
