I've grown to prefer professional HTs for monitoring for all the usual reasons: greater sensitivity, fewer channels in a scan list making it easier to use while cycling or driving, louder audio, rugged package, etc. So I sprung for a Yaesu FTA-450. It's plenty rugged, but it is really noisy. I can't tighten up the squelch indoors without hearing objectionable noise on many channels, probably generated by electrical appliances or wiring inside. And outside there's much more intermod and noise than I expected. It's reasonably sensitive when far away from everything, and I've tried a number of different antennas tuned to the band.

But it doesn't really work for the purpose I bought it for, which was to monitor a relatively small number of channels (example: nationwide airband allocations) without having to lock out or scan past noise all the time, especially on the road or on wheels when you can't safely play with menus. I don't have to touch my Motorolas while driving, and I'd love an airband unit that worked as well.

Aircraft folks, any thoughts?

Yeah, get a Icom R30. I have a yeasu VX-7R and tried to scan the bands. Worked ok. But seems it’s easily overloaded by close radio towers. Part of my bug out bag. Tried hooking up my outside discone. Worthless. Near radio towers washed allot out. Get a good receiver or scanner.

I tried out a Yaesu FTA-250 and a Rexon RHP-530 with the same results as OP. Returned both radios. Lots of noise. Unable to squelch. Sat side by side with a Uniden BC-125AT which did great but I wanted a professional handheld. I did have an Icom R-30 and it did a great job on civilian and military air. It was simply too complicated for me to use ;) I certainly miss the Sporty's JD-100's. So the Icom A25C works good? I wonder if it's due to the fact that it uses batteries rather than a battery pack? Have you actually used the PJ2 or Icom A25C xms3200 and iMonitor?

I own the Icom A25C with tie rechargeable battery pack. It is astounding in airband performance. My pilot buddies always said Icom makes a better product than Yaesu. I am really glad I took their advice.

I love my R30, and everyone's right -- it's the best VHF air rcvr. But a bit complicated to multitask with. And I'm always worried about dropping it. I'll look into the A25 though. Thanks.

I have had a Yaesu 550 since 2017 and I love it. For airshow applications it is amazing the speaker is very loud and is good for very noisy environments, but the static and squelch can be annoying at times

Normal characteristics for AM, noting wrong with your radio.
